The Zenin are one of jujutsu society’s major families, and their influence is tied to inherited cursed techniques. Their expectations shape the family conflicts involving Maki, Mai, Toji, and Megumi—and, after Naobito’s death, a succession dispute puts Megumi’s place in the clan at the center of events.
What is the Zenin Clan?
The Zenin are one of the major families in the fictional jujutsu world. Their standing is associated with inherited cursed techniques, and the family is portrayed as valuing sorcerers who meet its expectations. That hierarchy helps explain why people with unusual or limited cursed-energy abilities are treated as outsiders. This is an interpretation of the clan’s portrayal, not a quoted formal rule.

The clan’s role is not just background lore: its standards help drive the choices and conflicts of several important characters. The family tree also connects people whose names and relationships can make their ties less obvious.
How are Maki, Mai, Toji, and Megumi related to the clan?
| Character | Relationship or position | Ability and clan context |
|---|---|---|
| Maki Zenin | A Zenin daughter and Mai’s twin sister, according to secondary character references. | Her limited cursed energy and decision to pursue sorcery outside the family structure make her an outsider within the clan. |
| Mai Zenin | Maki’s twin sister; the official anime character index lists both as Zen’in characters. | Her relationship with Maki is central to the sisters’ conflict with the family. |
| Toji Fushiguro | Megumi’s father. Secondary clan references say Toji was born into the Zenin family, left it, and changed his surname. | Those references identify his lack of cursed energy as the reason for his rejection by the clan. |
| Megumi Fushiguro | Toji’s son, linking him to the Zenin by blood despite the Fushiguro surname. | His status becomes important to the clan’s succession dispute after Naobito’s death. |
Relationship and background details in this map are summarized by secondary reference material; the official sources cited here confirm the anime character listings and the plot connection to Maki’s visit, rather than providing a complete family guide.

Why are Maki and Mai in conflict with their family?
The sisters’ story shows the consequences of the Zenin hierarchy at a personal level. Maki’s limited cursed energy and her choice to pursue sorcery beyond the clan’s structure put her at odds with its expectations. Mai is also caught in the family conflict through her bond with Maki. The clan’s response to the sisters is part of the manga’s portrayal of its values, rather than evidence of a real-world social rule.
Why does Megumi become part of the succession dispute?
Naobito is identified in secondary clan references as the Zenin head, while his son Naoya expected to succeed him. Those same references report that a clause in Naobito’s will names Megumi instead. Because Megumi is Toji’s son, his Fushiguro name does not erase his connection to the Zenin family. The reported provision changes the leadership contest after Naobito’s death and draws Megumi into the clan’s affairs.

What happens when Maki visits the Zenin Clan?
Maki’s visit is a major post-Shibuya manga development. VIZ’s official synopsis for Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 17 says, “As the sorcerers begin to take action toward suppressing the lethal culling game, Maki pays the Zen’in clan a visit…” The synopsis confirms the visit, but does not describe its full sequence or outcome. The volume is credited to Gege Akutami and is the paperback edition released August 16, 2022.

The Zenin family connects several strands of Jujutsu Kaisen: inherited abilities and status, Maki and Mai’s family conflict, Toji’s break with his birth family, and Megumi’s unexpected role in a leadership dispute. Understanding those ties makes the clan’s importance clearer without treating secondary summaries of its customs as direct quotations from the manga.
