The series is written by Akutami and illustrated by Yuji Iwasaki, and it takes place 68 years after the Culling Game in a future where Japanese jujutsu sorcerers confront an extraterrestrial refugee crisis.
What is Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo?
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is a short-form manga set in the same fictional universe as Jujutsu Kaisen. Gege Akutami, the creator and original writer of Jujutsu Kaisen, writes the series, while Yuji Iwasaki provides the artwork. Iwasaki is known for Cipher Academy.
The Japanese title is 呪術廻戦≡. Its official reading is モジュロ, which explains why some early coverage and fan posts referred to the series as “Mojuro.” VIZ, the English-language publisher, uses Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. “Mojuro” should therefore be treated as an alternate romanization, not as a separate manga.
The story takes place 68 years after the Culling Game
The official Japanese synopsis places the story in 2086, 68 years after the Culling Game. The world is no longer dealing only with the consequences of cursed energy and jujutsu society. A spaceship arrives, followed by extraterrestrial beings who identify themselves as Simurians.

At the center of the new story are siblings Yuka Okkotsu and Tsurugi Okkotsu. Their names connect the new series to the established Jujutsu Kaisen world, but the premise moves well beyond the era and immediate conflicts of the original manga.
The central question is political and moral as much as supernatural: can Earth accommodate tens of thousands of powerful extraterrestrial refugees, or will their arrival lead to another war? The official collected-volume summaries state that approximately 50,000 Simurian refugees reach Earth and that a Simurian representative joins the Okkotsu siblings during an investigation into kidnappings in Kyoto.
Why aliens are part of a Jujutsu Kaisen story
Modulo expands the series’ scope from a secret conflict among humans and cursed spirits to a confrontation involving an entire nonhuman population. The extraterrestrial refugees are not presented merely as an invading army. Their arrival creates a problem of sanctuary, trust, security and coexistence.
That setup gives the spin-off a different kind of tension from the original series. Characters must decide whether the Simurians are an existential threat, a persecuted population seeking protection, or both at once. The official summaries describe conflict involving religion and cursed spirits, while later material follows Cross as his position on coexistence changes. These details suggest that the series uses its science-fiction premise to examine familiar Jujutsu Kaisen concerns—fear of the unknown, discrimination, power and the cost of choosing violence—through a new setting.
Is Modulo a sequel or a spin-off?
The most accurate description is a Jujutsu Kaisen spin-off and sequel set in the same universe, decades later. It is not best described as “Jujutsu Kaisen 2,” because it is not simply a direct continuation centered on the original cast.

It is a sequel in the broad sense that it inherits the world and history of Jujutsu Kaisen, including the significance of the Okkotsu name and the consequences of earlier events. It is a spin-off because it introduces a new central situation, a future setting and a largely new cast of characters.
Akutami’s project was also designed as a compact entry rather than an indefinitely expanding continuation. That makes it approachable for established fans who want to see what happened to the world after the original story, while giving new readers a more contained science-fiction story to investigate.
Who are the main characters?
- Yuka Okkotsu: One of the two Okkotsu siblings at the center of the story and part of the Japanese jujutsu response to the Simurian arrival.
- Tsurugi Okkotsu: Yuka’s sibling and the other key figure in the investigation and conflict surrounding the extraterrestrial refugees.
- Maru: A Simurian inspector connected to the supernatural investigation, according to VIZ’s description of the first English collected volume.
- Cross: A character whose changing view of coexistence becomes important in the volume summaries for the later collected editions.
- Yuji Itadori: The original series’ protagonist, whose appearance is referenced in the official summary for the third Japanese volume. His role should not be confused with the series’ central viewpoint: Modulo is built around the future Okkotsu-led story.
How long is Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo?
The manga is complete at 25 chapters. VIZ’s official chapter index lists the English digital release from chapter 1 on September 7, 2025, through chapter 25 on March 8, 2026.
The Japanese serialization began with Weekly Shonen Jump issue 41 of 2025. Depending on whether a publication date is described using Japanese magazine dating or the date used in another market, the launch may appear as September 8 or September 7. The safest summary is that Modulo began serialization in early September 2025.
The completed story has been collected in three Japanese volumes. This short length is an important distinction from the original Jujutsu Kaisen manga: readers can experience the entire Modulo story without committing to a long-running series.

Readers looking for the collection can check the listing for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, Vol. 1 at their preferred bookseller or manga retailer. The official English digital chapters are listed through VIZ’s Shonen Jump service, while Japanese readers can consult the publisher’s official Shonen Jump pages. Availability and regional access vary.
Should you read the original Jujutsu Kaisen first?
It is recommended, but not strictly necessary. Modulo is set far enough in the future to function as a new story, and its central premise—Simurian refugees arriving on Earth—does not require a chapter-by-chapter knowledge of the original manga.
However, readers who know the parent series will be better positioned to understand the importance of the Okkotsu name, the historical reference to the Culling Game and the significance of Yuji Itadori’s later appearance. If you are new to the franchise and want the full background, start with Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 1, then move to Modulo after experiencing the original series.
Where can you read Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo?
VIZ’s official chapter index lists the English digital chapters, with chapter 1 identified as free to read. Digital availability can depend on location, subscription access and the publisher’s current catalog, so use the official service available in your region.

What does “Modulo” mean here?
The title comes from the Japanese reading モジュロ, rendered officially by VIZ as “Modulo.” Early romanization differences are common when a Japanese title first circulates outside its original publication. In practical terms, searches for “Jujutsu Kaisen Mojuro” and “Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo” are generally referring to the same series, but Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is the preferred English-facing title.
What the announcement means for Jujutsu Kaisen fans
Modulo is significant because it extends Akutami’s world without pretending to be a conventional second season of the same story. Its 2086 setting creates room for new institutions, new social tensions and new supernatural rules while retaining recognizable links to the original manga.
The combination of jujutsu, extraterrestrial refugees and a conflict over coexistence also gives the spin-off a distinct identity. Rather than simply repeating the original formula, it asks what happens when the world’s definition of “other” becomes interplanetary—and when protecting people may require cooperation with beings that society fears.
