Yuka, Tsurugi and Maru investigate a first-grade student who has repeated the grade for three years. The boy says he found his mother dead and wished to stay in first grade. Her lingering spirit apparently granted that wish. The explanation initially frames the case as a strange but sympathetic consequence of grief.
The investigation grows darker when the group finds bones believed to belong to the mother. The boy admits that he buried her body. Then Yuka reports five bodies at the address where Tsurugi and Maru are standing. The child strikes Maru, and the apparent child’s face gives way to the features of an elderly man.

Why does the chapter feel like horror?
A sympathetic story becomes a crime scene
The opening premise invites sympathy: a child has lost his mother and clings to the familiar safety of school. The discovery of bones changes the emotional terms of the investigation. What seemed like a supernatural explanation for a child’s unusual behavior now sits alongside physical evidence of violence.
The reveal makes the child uncanny
The final shift is not simply another frightening image. The figure the group has treated as a child is revealed to be an elderly man beneath an apparent child’s face. That concealed identity reorders the scene: the vulnerable-seeming student becomes a source of immediate danger, and the earlier account no longer feels secure.

The shock is tonal, not an official label
Calling the chapter a return to horror describes how its story moves from grief toward bodily evidence and deception. It does not establish that Chapter 4 is the series’ first horror turn or that every reader will find it terrifying.
