Her family said she died in her sleep while visiting relatives in Marina del Rey, according to the Los Angeles Times. No cause of death was given.
Judy Pace’s role in Brian’s Song
Pace played Linda Sayers, the wife of football player Gale Sayers, in Brian’s Song, the 1971 made-for-TV film remembered for its portrait of Sayers and teammate Brian Piccolo. The role connected Pace to one of television’s best-known sports dramas, but it was one part of a career that moved between film and television.

Early film work and television roles
Pace’s first film role was in William Castle’s 1963 thriller 13 Frightened Girls, the Los Angeles Times reported. Her credits also included the television series Peyton Place and The Young Lawyers, as well as the 1970 film Cotton Comes to Harlem. The HistoryMakers’ biography of Pace provides additional career context.
The Times reported that Pace received a 1970 NAACP Image Award for her work on The Young Lawyers. It also relayed her family’s description of her as the first Black woman under contract with Columbia Studios; that distinction is attributed to the family account.

How Roger Ebert described her performance
Film critic Roger Ebert praised Pace’s performance in Three in the Attic as that of “a quick, funny actress who can put an edge on a line and keep a scene sparkling,” as quoted in the Times obituary.
What Pace said about roles for Black actresses
In a 1969 interview with Ebert, Pace spoke directly about the limited opportunities available to Black actresses in film. “The hardest thing to do is to find any sort of movie role if you’re a black actress. People don’t realize that,” she said. “They talk about Sidney Poitier and Jim Brown — but where are the actresses?” The interview is preserved in the RogerEbert.com archive.

Pace also described television as a vital source of work at the time: “Let’s face it. If it weren’t for TV, all the young black actresses in Hollywood would be unemployed.” She challenged the narrow roles she saw on screen, saying, “All the black women in the movies seem to be nurses, schoolteachers, social workers. Black women lead real lives, baby; they’re not all doctors’ wives.” These are her observations from 1969, not a description of the industry today.

Pace’s daughters confirmed her death, the Wrap reported. Her family asked that donations be made to the NAACP in lieu of flowers.
