The plan named The Weekend hosts Symone Sanders-Townsend, Michael Steele and Alicia Menendez for a new weekday 7 p.m. show, while reshaping the 9 p.m. hour.
What MSNBC announced about Joy Reid
MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler confirmed Reid’s departure in a staff memo on February 24, 2025, according to the Associated Press. The ReidOut, which had aired on weeknights at 7 p.m. ET since 2020, was ending. The announcement came alongside changes to other weekday and weekend programming, rather than as an isolated show update.
How the weekday lineup was set to change
The 7 p.m. hour
Sanders-Townsend, Steele and Menendez, co-hosts of The Weekend, were named to host a new weekday ensemble program in the 7 p.m. hour, the AP reported. The schedule details were also reported by TV Insider.
The 9 p.m. hour
Jen Psaki was slated to host Tuesday through Friday. Rachel Maddow was set to return to Monday nights after the first 100 days of the Trump administration, according to the AP’s account of the announced schedule.

Alex Wagner’s role
Wagner’s regular 9 p.m. hosting slot ended, but the AP reported that she would remain at MSNBC as a senior political analyst. The change was an end to her regular show slot, not an announced departure from the network.
What MSNBC said about the changes—and what other reports said
Kutler’s memo framed the schedule overhaul as a way to serve audiences while preparing for the network’s future. The AP quoted her as saying: “In the years ahead, we must continue to show up for our audiences in this critical moment while simultaneously best positioning ourselves for the future.”

That public framing is distinct from other reported interpretations. The Washington Post reported that an anonymous source familiar with the situation said Reid’s exit should not be read as a move toward the political center. That was the source’s interpretation, not MSNBC’s stated explanation.
Semafor separately reported that Maddow had privately objected to decisions that included canceling Reid’s and Wagner’s shows and asking affected employees to reapply for new roles. This account concerns reported internal reaction; it does not establish the network’s official rationale.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
The February 2025 coverage establishes what MSNBC announced at that time: Reid and The ReidOut were leaving, the 7 p.m. hour was to get a new ensemble show, and the 9 p.m. schedule was to change. It does not verify what lineup is airing now. The schedule details above should therefore be understood as the announced plan, not a confirmation of MSNBC’s 2026 programming.
