Jonesville: When Sunflowers Fall, a 2025 WKU PBS documentary about a historically Black Bowling Green neighborhood displaced during Western Kentucky University’s expansion, is reported to have won an Ohio Valley Emmy Award for Best Historical Documentary. Spring Point Partners reports that Jonesville descendant Akisha Townsend Eaton co-wrote and produced the film; an official Emmy listing was not available to independently confirm the award.
What is the Jonesville documentary about?
Jonesville: When Sunflowers Fall tells the story of Jonesville, an African American community in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and its displacement as Western Kentucky University expanded. WKU says residents and descendants partnered in making the 2025 WKU PBS documentary, which presents the history through descendants’ families and historians. WKU’s Jonesville history page and its film announcement connect the university’s expansion to the neighborhood’s loss.

WKU says Jonesville was established around 1881 by formerly enslaved Black people who had fought for the Union during the Civil War. By the 1960s, the neighborhood covered about 30 acres and was home to nearly 500 people, according to the university. It had homes, businesses, gathering places and traditions—not simply vacant land awaiting development.
How was Jonesville displaced?
WKU describes the neighborhood’s acquisition as part of the Urban Renewal Program. Residents who refused to sell faced condemnation proceedings, and some received a fraction of their property’s value. The Kentucky Museum’s Jonesville exhibit says the City of Bowling Green directed an urban-renewal campaign in 1963 that demolished the community and removed its residents; the land was then sold to WKU.

The museum exhibit preserves a resident’s recollection of life in the community. Rev. Porter W. Bailey said: “We had no keys to houses. We didn’t have to lock up cars. It was a very respectable neighborhood, and people respected you.” That memory gives the documentary’s subject its human scale: the story is about a community and the people who lost homes, businesses and gathering places, as well as about campus growth.
