Albania’s Archive Museum opened on October 6, 2026, at the General Directorate of Archives in Tirana. Its central exhibits are not conventional museum objects but records that trace Albanian social, cultural and institutional life—from birth to death.
What is the Archive Museum?
The new museum presents documentary heritage as a way to understand how people and institutions lived. At the opening, General Director of Archives Auron Rrokaj drew a distinction between an archive museum and a museum about an institution: “This is an archive museum, not a museum of the archives. It is not like other museums, a museum of an institution or a particular field of activity. It is a museum of documents,” ATA reported, in coverage carried by ABNA-SE.
That distinction shapes the visit: documents themselves are the primary evidence and exhibits, rather than background material supporting a collection organized around objects.

How does the museum use digital and interactive displays?
Physical documents are presented alongside digital displays, holograms, quizzes and other interactive features. The reports identify younger visitors as a particular audience for this approach. Rrokaj told ATA that young people would like the museum, while the documentary collection remains its defining feature.

What did the archive’s director report about changes at the archives?
At the inauguration, Rrokaj described changes over the preceding 13 years. The following figures are his claims as reported by RTSH, not results from an independently published statistical study:

RTSH reported that Rrokaj said the 25% digitisation figure met a target originally planned for the end of 2028. He also said archival collections are stored in three new buildings in Shkozë, Tirana. Academy of Sciences President Skënder Gjinushi attended the inauguration and said the archives follow modern organisational standards suited to current needs, according to RTSH.

Where is it, and what should visitors check before going?
The museum opened at the premises of Albania’s General Directorate of Archives in Tirana. The Directorate’s official website lists archive-related resources and services, including researcher registration and search guidance, reading-room rules, a library, photo and sound archives, and online researcher services. Those services do not establish museum visitor arrangements. The available reports and website information do not specify museum hours, tickets, booking requirements or visitor entrance details; contact the institution to confirm practical arrangements before setting out.
