He traced their romance to working together on the 1985 miniseries North and South; Francis’s official biography says they married in 1988. The 38 years describes the relationship as Frakes counted it in 2023—not the length of their marriage.
How Jonathan Frakes and Genie Francis met
Frakes told PEOPLE that he first met Francis when they were both working on the television series Bare Essence. They later reunited for North and South, the miniseries filmed on location in Charleston and Natchez. Frakes said they fell in love during that production.
Frakes recalled that their first date took place during a Memorial Day break in 1985, when they went out in New Orleans. That date and the account of how their courtship developed come from Frakes’s recollection in the interview.
What Frakes said about their relationship
In the interview, published November 24, 2023, Frakes said, “We’ve been together for 38 years.” He also joked about their early dating days: “So why she would go out with me is a mystery!” The first remark refers to the duration of their relationship at the time of the interview.

When did they get married?
Francis’s official biography says she and Frakes married in 1988. That gives the couple’s marriage a different timeline from Frakes’s statement about being together for 38 years: he was describing their relationship, which he traced to 1985, rather than saying they had been married for 38 years.
The careers that brought them together
Genie Francis
Francis is widely known for playing Laura Spencer on General Hospital. Her official biography also lists her work on North and South and other daytime dramas. ABC’s press biography likewise identifies her with the role of Laura and lists Bare Essence and North and South among her credits.

The number comes from Frakes’s interview published in November 2023. It should be read as his description of the relationship’s duration then, not as a current count or the number of years they had been married. The available biographical source confirms their 1988 wedding, while the dating details are Frakes’s account.
