Jon Stewart cut his index finger after smashing a prop coffee mug during the February 24, 2025 episode of The Daily Show. He briefly hid the injury below the desk, then showed the audience a bloodied napkin and carried on with the segment.
How Jon Stewart cut his hand on The Daily Show
The injury happened during a monologue about government spending, including pharmaceutical industry subsidies and drug prices. The Los Angeles Times reported that Stewart had introduced a prop labeled “World’s Most Dad” as part of a mock “wannabe accountant starter kit.” He slammed the mug onto his desk, breaking it and cutting his hand. The Los Angeles Times’ account places the smash in the segment’s discussion of pharmaceutical subsidies.
TVLine reported that Stewart noticed the cut and said, “I’ll be going to the hospital soon.” He kept his hand below the desk for about three minutes as he continued speaking. At an applause break, he held up a bloodied napkin and told the audience, “It’s fine!” TVLine’s February 25 report also noted that he posted before the episode aired: “It’s a bloody good episode…emphasis on bloody… I’m an idiot….”
What happened after the mug broke
After a commercial break, Stewart returned with his index finger bandaged, though it was still bleeding, according to TVLine. He joked that he had fought a crew member with a lightsaber during the break. The reports establish that he had a cut finger and later a small healing wound; they do not establish further treatment or lasting harm.

In a March 4 follow-up, TheWrap reported that Stewart described a safety meeting involving Paramount and Viacom departments. He said, “I am not allowed to have big boy mugs anymore,” and showed a custom-made plastic mug with a sippy-cup lid. TheWrap also reported that the wound on his index finger had been glued back together. The replacement mug was described as custom-made; the report does not identify it as a retail product or an endorsement. Read TheWrap’s follow-up.
How the 2025 mug injury differs from Stewart’s 2011 injury
Stewart had a separate reported hand injury in 2011 during a Weiner-themed bit involving a broken margarita glass. TheWrap’s contemporary report said he received six stitches, citing a Comedy Central spokesperson. The Los Angeles Times also recalled an earlier injury during a bit involving John Oliver and a margarita blender. These are accounts of a different incident; the six-stitch detail belongs to the 2011 glass injury, not the 2025 mug cut. TheWrap’s 2011 report.
