The strongest candidate for Joker: Folie à Deux’s best scene is Arthur Fleck’s courtroom confrontation with Gary Puddles. It is the moment when the sequel’s central question—whether Arthur is a person or the Joker he performs—becomes painfully concrete. The scene suggests a tighter film built around courtroom testimony, identity and accountability. That is a critical counterfactual, not proof of what the filmmakers intended or what the movie would have been.
Why the Gary Puddles scene stands out
The title’s reference to a “best scene” is not tied to a named scene by its author. The Gary Puddles courtroom sequence is a well-supported candidate: a Christian Science Monitor review excerpt singles out Gary’s testimony as one of the film’s best sequences, and cinematographer Lawrence Sher discusses Arthur’s interrogation of Gary in court. The identification is persuasive, but it cannot be confirmed as the headline author’s intended choice.
Gary matters because he is not just another witness. His testimony brings Arthur face to face with the consequences of the Joker persona and with someone harmed by the violence associated with it. Arthur tries to command the room as Joker, but the performance falters. The scene’s dramatic force comes from the gap between the power he is trying to project and the human consequences he cannot erase.
How the scene makes Arthur’s identity conflict visible
Joker: Folie à Deux is a 2024 feature directed by Todd Phillips and co-written by Phillips and Scott Silver. At 138 minutes, it follows Arthur at Arkham as he awaits trial, grapples with his dual identity and discovers music, according to the Venice festival program. The courtroom scene concentrates that premise: Arthur’s public performance of Joker collides with the person forced to answer for what he has done.

Sher describes the interrogation as Joker trying to evoke power, unsuccessfully. The camera circles Arthur in a fluid 360-degree move; Sher says the disorienting motion reflects Arthur searching for ideas that fail. When the scene reaches its closing statement, it shifts to handheld camera work, departing from the courtroom’s usual visual language. The change makes the unraveling performance feel less controlled: the camera’s movement tracks a character who can no longer direct the room—or himself. Sher’s account of these choices appears in his interview with The Credits.
What the musical fantasy contributes
The Gary confrontation sits within a film that treats music as a route into Arthur’s inner life, rather than simply as a break from the courtroom story. Phillips told Variety, “Most of the music in the movie is really just dialogue.” He explained that Arthur sings when he cannot find the words for what he wants to say, and that many numbers belong to the characters’ imaginations rather than ordinary shared reality.

That subjective approach helps explain the contrast between fantasy and testimony. In the courtroom song “The Joker,” Sher says, the visual design uses underexposed red light and spotlights that isolate Joker and Harley while leaving others outside the lit space. He connects the red and silhouette imagery with danger, threat and violence. The creative intent is clear; whether the imagery works for every viewer is a matter of interpretation. In the Gary scene, the fantasy of control meets a witness who makes its consequences unavoidable.
At Venice, Phillips described the film as sharing the first Joker’s visual world for much of its running time, then breaking from it “with the freedom of Arthur’s imagination and where Arthur would take something.” He also said music let the filmmakers lean into Arthur’s romance, panache and style, while keeping the experience informed by his eyes. Those remarks, collected in a Golden Globes Venice interview, frame the musical passages as part of the film’s point of view—not an objective account of events.

There is a practical production detail behind that fluidity: sound mixer Steven Morrow says the actors sang live with pianists accompanying them, allowing performers to set the tempo and shape each take rather than follow playback. That describes how the vocals were recorded; it does not, by itself, establish why a particular scene succeeds.

The Gary sequence points toward a plausible alternative: a leaner courtroom character drama that keeps Arthur’s identity and accountability at the center. Such a film could use fantasy as an occasional window into his self-image, while allowing testimony and its consequences to carry the main dramatic line. That is an editorial proposal, not a documented intention by Phillips or his collaborators.

The scene’s promise is also a critical judgment, not a verdict established by the available sources. It raises a useful question: does Gary’s testimony create an emotional turn that the rest of the film sustains? A viewer can find the confrontation powerful while feeling that the larger movie does not remain focused on the conflict it sharpens. The distinction is important: a standout scene can reveal a compelling direction without proving that the entire film would be better in a different form.
