Its most revealing passage is a ten-minute, wordless train sequence: Vikram’s careful movements, the editing, and the sound around him make suspense legible without explaining it. Director Sriram Raghavan’s account of the film’s influences and title shows how that precise crime story also converses with noir and older Hindi cinema.
What happens in Johnny Gaddaar?
Released in 2007, the Hindi crime thriller follows Vikram (Neil Nitin Mukesh), the youngest member of a five-man criminal group. The men pool their money to buy drugs cheaply from a corrupt police officer. Vikram, who is also in love with Mini, the wife of his partner Shardul, decides to take the money and escape. He ambushes Daya, but the encounter ends in a mistaken killing. The plot then follows the consequences of his greed and betrayal.
That setup gives the film a tight mechanical premise—money disappears, a plan breaks, and the others must reckon with what happened—while putting a personal betrayal at its center. The tension comes not only from whether Vikram can get away, but from the damage his choice leaves among people who had trusted one another.
How does the train sequence create suspense without dialogue?
The film’s centerpiece is a ten-minute sequence in which Vikram steals the money from Daya aboard a moving train. It is wordless, relying on what the viewer can see and hear rather than explanatory conversation. The sequence’s careful cuts track the operation and its risks; natural background sound gives the setting presence, while the sparse dialogue leaves room for small changes in movement to carry meaning.

This is suspense built through staging and film form. The viewer follows the physical problem—how Vikram can take the money—as it unfolds, and each visual detail matters because the plan could be noticed or disrupted. The sequence makes the theft feel like a process with immediate consequences, not merely a plot point reported after the fact.
Why is the film cold without being emotionally empty?
Raghavan described the contrast directly in a 2017 interview with Nandini Ramnath for Scroll.in: “It is a very cold film, the guy [Vikram] doesn’t have a heart, but the other characters do.” He also said, “I tried my best to infuse every other character with life.”

The distinction matters to the film’s moral texture. Vikram’s coldness gives the crime plot its ruthless forward drive, but the people around him are not simply pieces on a board. Their emotional lives make his betrayal register as more than a clever scheme gone wrong. The retrospective credits Muraleedharan CK with cinematography and Pooja Ladha Surti with editing, alongside Raghavan’s writing and direction.
Which films and literary work informed Raghavan?
The retrospective lists Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment and the crime films The Killing, Rififi, Un Flic, and Parwana among the influences. These references place Johnny Gaddaar in conversation with crime fiction and cinema; they do not establish any one of those works as the story’s source.

In a separate 2018 interview, Raghavan said the story was based on a book he had read while working at ISRO, whose library he remembered as strong. The published account does not name the book, so its identity remains unspecified. The influences listed in the retrospective should not be conflated with that unidentified book.
What does the title have to do with Johnny Mera Naam?
The title nods to Vijay Anand’s 1970 film Johnny Mera Naam. In Raghavan’s film, Vikram sees the older movie on a hotel television and later uses “Johnny” as an alias. Raghavan said he added the explanatory moment after Neil Nitin Mukesh’s father asked why a film about Vikram was called Johnny Gaddaar. The reference thus belongs to the story itself, rather than functioning only as a label for the audience.

Raghavan’s pre-release comments also connected his approach to the creative possibilities of thrillers and to Hindi cinema of the 1970s, as reported by Rediff.com and Filmibeat.
