Public accounts describe Chris as a golfer, Rick as a photographer and Cory as a classical guitarist and recording artist. Rick died in 1991, and PEOPLE reported in 2025 that Chris had died earlier that year. The brothers maintained a low public profile, so the documented record is limited.
Who were Johnny Carson’s sons?
Carson and Wolcott married in 1949. Wolcott was described as Carson’s childhood sweetheart and the mother of his three sons; the couple separated in 1963, according to the Television Academy’s republication of an Associated Press obituary.
| Son | Birth year | Publicly reported work | Later-life information in the public record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christopher “Chris” Carson | 1950 | Golfer; a 1986 Los Angeles Times profile described one of Carson’s sons as a professional golfer in Fort Lauderdale, and PEOPLE later identified Chris as an avid golfer living in Florida. | PEOPLE reported in June 2025 that he died earlier that year at age 74. The report did not state an exact date or cause. |
| Kim Arthur “Rick” or “Ricky” Carson | 1951 | Served in the U.S. Navy and became a photographer, according to PEOPLE. | Died in a car accident on June 21, 1991, at age 39, while taking photographs near California’s Central Coast. |
| Barry William “Cory” Carson | 1953 | Classical guitarist and recording artist, as described by PEOPLE. | Has spoken publicly about family privacy and the contrast he perceived between his father’s on-screen warmth and his reserved family life. |
What happened to Rick Carson?
Rick Carson died on June 21, 1991, aged 39, in a car accident while taking photographs near California’s Central Coast. PEOPLE quoted California Highway Patrol Officer Russ Johnson saying, “It appears as though he was taking photographs,” and that camera equipment was beside the road. The account does not establish more than the officer’s attributed description, so details beyond that should not be assumed.
About three weeks later, Johnny Carson returned to The Tonight Show and used the closing minutes to remember Rick and show some of his nature photographs. PEOPLE quoted Carson describing his son as “an exuberant young man, fun to be around. When Rick was around, you wanted to smile.” The Television Academy’s AP obituary also records Rick’s death and identifies him as one of Carson’s three sons.

Did Johnny Carson’s son Chris die?
Yes. PEOPLE reported on June 2, 2025, citing family friend Howard Smith, that Chris Carson had died earlier in 2025 at age 74. The report said he lived in Florida but did not provide the precise date or cause of death. Chris had been described as an avid golfer; a 1986 Los Angeles Times profile identified one of Carson’s sons as a professional golfer in Fort Lauderdale.
What does Cory Carson do?
PEOPLE identifies Cory Carson as a classical guitarist and recording artist. He has also commented on how private the family was, saying, “We must have inherited the privacy gene.” That remark is Cory’s own characterization, not a complete account of the family’s relationships or contact.

What is publicly known about the family’s privacy?
A 1986 Los Angeles Times profile noted that the sons had rarely been photographed. In that interview, Carson said, “All I ever told them was, ‘Do what makes you happy.’” Together with Cory’s later comment, the quotations offer the family’s own limited public framing. They do not establish the full nature of the relationships between father and sons, and the brothers’ low profile is not evidence of any particular private dynamic.
