The headline claim that the film “mints another action star” is a reasonable reading of that casting, but it is an interpretation rather than an established result. One contemporary critic found Emmanuel’s action work compelling; the available reporting does not show box-office performance, audience consensus or a lasting career effect. The details below are drawn from announcements and reviews dated July to August 2024, so availability should be checked before you watch.
What the 2024 film is
Peacock’s July 17, 2024 announcement describes the film as “a radical reimagining of his 1989 Hong Kong classic, The Killer.” That is the studio’s promotional framing, but Universal’s official home-entertainment listing also identifies the film as a new work by Woo, with a 2024 release year and an R rating. Runtime is the one detail the sources disagree on: Universal lists 2 hours 6 minutes, while Peacock lists 2 hours 5 minutes. Treat the running time as roughly two hours.

The clearest way to see what changed is to set the two films side by side. The sources reviewed do not describe the 1989 plot in detail, so the table records only what is established.

The new hook and how far it departs from the original
In the 2024 film, Zee is a contract killer with a personal code. Her refusal to kill a blind young woman is the event that turns a professional job into a manhunt, and it brings a police investigator into the story. The Guardian’s reviewer, Jesse Hassenger, describes the basic setup as similar to the original while noting significant changes to its mechanics. In his reading, the change of gender is the most immediately noticeable difference, and the new film is less romantic and less operatic than vintage Woo. Those are one reviewer’s judgments and should be read that way.

Why Woo made the assassin a woman
In a TheWrap interview published August 23, 2024, Woo said that the screenwriters Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken suggested changing the original male lead to a woman, and that the idea interested him. His words were: “That really excited me. I had never shot a female hero. I said, ‘Okay, that made me interested to do that.'”
Woo also described the project during production as “another version of ‘The Killer.'” In the same interview he said he was happy with the script changes made by Brian Helgeland, including a happier ending. These are Woo’s own accounts of the production, not independently verified facts about it.

The cast and Emmanuel’s role
Peacock and Universal both name Nathalie Emmanuel, Omar Sy, Sam Worthington and Diana Silvers in the principal cast. Emmanuel plays Zee, and Sy’s role is the investigator who becomes involved in her pursuit. The sources do not specify the roles played by Worthington and Silvers, so none are described here.
Woo told TheWrap that Emmanuel preferred to do “98% of the stunts by herself.” That is Woo’s claim from the interview. No independent stunt breakdown in the sources confirms the figure, so it should be read as his description of her approach.

What the reviews support
The Guardian’s review by Jesse Hassenger, published August 23, 2024, is the most detailed independent assessment among the sources. Hassenger wrote that Emmanuel “cuts a striking action figure” and brings the empathy needed for a killer with a code. He describes Omar Sy’s character as a likable foe who becomes a friend, and he praises Woo’s inventive staging of the action.
Does the film establish Emmanuel as an action star?
The claim that Woo “mints another action star” rests on a specific set of facts. The evidence on each side is clear:
Rank #4
- What supports the claim: Emmanuel is the lead of a reworked classic, Woo built the film around a female hero, and one critic found her performance a striking action presence.
- What the sources do not establish: box-office results, audience response beyond the critic’s view, industry-wide recognition, or any follow-on roles for Emmanuel as an action lead.
A reasonable reading is that the film gives Emmanuel a conspicuous showcase as an action lead. Whether that showcase leads to a career as an action star depends on evidence that the 2024 reporting cannot supply.
