The bad news for John Wick fans is that the fifth film still has no public timeline—and two other projects are expected to come first. That is not the same as cancellation: the latest reported update says Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski have found an idea for John Wick 5 that excites them, but several steps remain.
What is the bad news about the John Wick franchise?
In an April 26, 2026 report, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson said Reeves and Stahelski had landed on a core idea for the next film. He also said there were “a lot of steps” ahead and declined to put a timeline on it. The report says the Caine spinoff and an animated prequel are expected before John Wick 5. It gives no release dates for those projects or the sequel. ComicBook.com’s report attributes the update to Fogelson.

Is John Wick 5 canceled?
No cancellation is reported. The latest update describes a creative idea the filmmakers are excited about, not a film with a confirmed production start or release date. Lionsgate announced Reeves’ return for John Wick 5 at CinemaCon in April 2025, but Variety reported that the studio gave no plot details or production timeline at the time. Variety’s CinemaCon report quoted Fogelson saying the returning team would do so only if they had something “truly phenomenal and fresh to say” about the characters and world.
What projects are expected before the fifth film?
Caine spinoff
The April 2026 report says the Caine film is expected to arrive before John Wick 5. It does not state a release date.
#1 Best Overall
Animated prequel
An animated prequel is also reported to precede the fifth film. No public release window is supplied in the cited update.
What else has Lionsgate listed for the franchise?
Lionsgate’s fiscal 2025 materials described John Wick: Chapter 5, the Caine project, an animated movie, and the television series Under the High Table as in development. The same company materials mentioned a John Wick AAA game in the works and the John Wick Experience in Las Vegas as opened. These are disclosures from fiscal 2025, not confirmation that every project remains on the same schedule now. “In development” does not mean that filming has begun. Lionsgate’s franchise overview put the series’ global box office at “$1Bn+”; Variety reported John Wick: Chapter 4 grossed $440 million worldwide.
Rank #2
- John Wick (Keanu Reeves) takes on his most lethal adversaries yet in the upcoming fourth installment of the series. With the price on his head ever increasing, Wick takes his fight against the High Table global as he seeks out the most powerful players in the underworld, from New York to Paris to Osaka to Berlin.
What fans can—and cannot—plan around
- Established: Lionsgate announced Reeves’ return for the fifth film in April 2025, and the April 2026 update says Reeves and Stahelski have an idea they are excited about.
- Not established: A release date, a production start date, or a confirmed full schedule for the sequel and other projects.
- Reported order: The Caine spinoff and animated prequel are expected before John Wick 5, according to the April 2026 report.
For now, the clearest expectation is uncertainty rather than a specific year to circle: the fifth film has a reported creative starting point, but no public timetable.
