What happened to John Sykes?
A statement announcing Sykes’s death cited his cancer battle. It did not specify when or where he died. The Guardian later reported that he died in December 2024, while the announcement itself was made on January 20, 2025. The statement, as reproduced by The Guardian, remembered him as “a man with exceptional musical talent” and described him as thoughtful, kind and charismatic.
Which bands did John Sykes play with?
Sykes built a career across several hard-rock and heavy-metal bands rather than being defined by one record. His work moved from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene into Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake, then into his own band and solo recordings.
Tygers of Pan Tang
After early work with Streetfighter, Sykes began his professional career with Tygers of Pan Tang around 1980. His playing on the band’s Spellbound album made a strong impression on fellow guitarist Marty Friedman. In a 2025 interview with Eddie Trunk, quoted by Guitar World, Friedman called Sykes’s arrival on the album “a game changer” for him.

Whitesnake
After Thin Lizzy, Sykes joined Whitesnake. He played on the U.S. version of Slide It In and on the band’s self-titled 1987 album, sharing songwriting credit with David Coverdale. Whitesnake dismissed Sykes before the 1987 album’s release. The Los Angeles Times and The Guardian reported that he learned of the decision indirectly; accounts of the split differ, so it is best understood as a disputed episode rather than a settled personal narrative.
Blue Murder and solo work
After leaving Whitesnake, Sykes formed Blue Murder with bassist Tony Franklin and drummer Carmine Appice. He went on to release solo albums, continuing as a bandleader and songwriter beyond his work with larger groups.

Sykes brought a distinctive lead-guitar presence to several bands at important turning points: Tygers of Pan Tang’s early metal years, Thin Lizzy’s last studio-album era, and Whitesnake’s commercially prominent 1987 period. He then carried that identity into Blue Murder and solo work. His story is therefore not only the story of a celebrated Whitesnake record, but of a guitarist who moved through multiple influential hard-rock scenes while continuing to write and perform under his own name.
