He later called the incident a serious mistake and discussed rehabilitation and substance use. Other episodes often grouped under “controversies” come from his own memoir or later comments about his former wife, Rebecca Romijn; those accounts should not be confused with independently established findings.
The 2015 DUI charge is the clearest documented controversy
On October 15, 2015, TIME reported that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office had announced a DUI charge against Stamos. That is the contemporary legal event: a charge, not a conviction or a full account of what happened.
In a January 2016 interview with Howard Stern, later covered by ABC News, Stamos described the DUI as a mistake and discussed entering rehabilitation and his struggles with substance use. His later reflections add his perspective; they are distinct from the official announcement of the charge.
What Stamos revisited in his memoir
In If You Would Have Told Me: A Memoir, published in 2023, Stamos revisited personal experiences including childhood sexual abuse, alcohol struggles, the DUI, and his marriage and separation from Romijn. Biography.com’s profile identifies the memoir and notes its subjects; Entertainment Tonight’s account summarizes material from the book and interviews.

These passages are Stamos’s account of his life, not separate findings of wrongdoing. In particular, his disclosure of childhood sexual abuse is a personal experience, not a controversy for which he is culpable. The memoir’s treatment of his marriage and separation should likewise be read as his recollection rather than a complete, independently verified account of both partners’ perspectives.
Stamos’s 2025 comments about Rebecca Romijn
In a December 30, 2025 report, The Daily Beast reported that Stamos said Romijn had made remarks about his intelligence and that he had not gotten over them. This is a claim about what he recalls her saying, not an established fact about Romijn. The report says the outlet sought comment from both Stamos and Romijn.

John Stamos and the college admissions scandal
Stamos’s connection to Lori Loughlin, his former Full House co-star, is not evidence that he took part in the college admissions scheme. A 2023 Daily Beast report on his memoir says he contacted Loughlin after the scandal became public. The reviewed reporting does not establish that Stamos participated in the scheme.
