Meteorologist John Morales said he choked up because he was processing an alarming update about Hurricane Milton while preparing to speak on air—and thinking about the people in the storm’s path. In later interviews, he described the moment as a mix of empathy, climate anxiety and frustration. His explanation describes what he was feeling; it is not, by itself, scientific evidence that climate change caused Milton’s intensity.
What happened just before Morales went on air?
Morales, a hurricane specialist for WTVJ NBC6 Miami, said a National Hurricane Center bulletin reporting that Milton had reached Category 5 arrived shortly before his broadcast. In a 2025 Vital Signs interview, he recalled that the storm had been Category 1 the previous evening.
He was looking at the pressure data and calculating how quickly it had fallen when it was his turn to speak. In a 2024 Climate One interview, he described the transition: “I’m looking at these numbers. I’m looking at a chart. I’m seeing the pressure drop. I’m doing the calculation in my head and suddenly it’s my turn to speak.”
During the broadcast, Morales said Milton’s pressure had dropped 50 millibars in 10 hours and reported maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. Those figures are from his on-air report, as reproduced in the Climate One transcript and CNN’s transcript of the broadcast. The rapid change was striking to him as a meteorologist; the figures explain the urgency of the moment without, on their own, explaining what caused the storm to intensify.

What did Morales say he was feeling?
In the 2025 Vital Signs interview, Morales said several emotions converged: concern for people who would face the storm, climate-related angst and frustration that years of warnings had not produced enough action. He described the combination this way: “It was a combination of — I want to call it angst — but others might call it climate anxiety. It was also empathy for future victims. And then the last factor was frustration because I’ve been communicating on climate for a quarter century and I’ve been urging folks to act, whether that’s through voting, taking community action, or even individual action.”
The brief apology heard in the viral broadcast—“I apologize. This is just horrific.”—captured his reaction in the moment. His later interviews provide the fuller explanation; they should not be treated as a contemporaneous scientific analysis of Milton.

Does his reaction show that climate change caused Hurricane Milton?
No. Morales’s comments explain his own climate concerns and emotional response, not the result of a storm-attribution study. The interviews and broadcast transcript cited here do not establish that climate change caused Milton or quantify its influence on the storm. A claim about how climate change affected a particular hurricane requires scientific attribution evidence, which is distinct from a meteorologist’s account of what he was thinking on air.

The broadcast compressed a sudden, consequential update and a personal reaction into a few seconds. Morales was not simply reading a forecast: by his account, he was absorbing the storm’s reported rapid intensification, considering the people who might be affected and then speaking live. The emotion made visible the human weight he associated with delivering severe-weather news, while his later account clarified that the reaction had several causes rather than one.
