John Henry Basil Mayer was an Indian composer and violinist born in Calcutta in 1929 to an Anglo-Indian father and a Tamil mother. His collaboration with Jamaican-born saxophonist Joe Harriott helped establish Indo-Jazz fusion, bringing Indian classical instruments into conversation with a jazz quintet. Mayer was a pioneer of this specific movement—not, on the evidence available, the sole inventor of fusion music as a whole. He is not the American singer-songwriter of the same name.

Who was John Mayer?

Mayer was born at Eden Hospital in Calcutta on 28 October 1929. The biographical account on his composer website describes a poor family and says he received violin instruction for free or after hours because his parents could not afford regular lessons. He began studying violin as a child, later learning from Philippe Sandre and Mehli Mehta.

In 1952, Mayer won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London and moved to Britain. He built a career as an orchestral violinist while composing across Indian and Western classical traditions. His background was not a late-career turn toward Indian music: he was already finding ways to bring musical systems together before his best-known jazz collaboration.

What did Mayer create with Joe Harriott?

Mayer’s central contribution was the music for Indo-Jazz Fusions, a project he developed with Joe Harriott, a Jamaican-born saxophonist and leading figure in British jazz. The ensemble paired Harriott’s jazz quintet with Indian classical musicians and instruments, including sitar, tabla and tambura. Mayer played violin and harpsichord as well as composing.

The combination was more than a jazz group adding an Indian instrument for color. It set distinct musical traditions alongside one another in a shared ensemble. In John Lewis’s 2011 history of Indo-jazz fusion for The Guardian, he called the result “an awkward, fascinating and often beautiful conversation between cool-school jazz and Indian music” and said it would lay foundations for later experiments.

How did Indo-Jazz Fusions come about?

Mayer’s earlier work shows that the cross-cultural idea preceded the Harriott project. In 1958, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra premiered his Dance Suite, written for sitar, flute, tabla, tanpura and symphony orchestra. According to the biography credited to Bruce Eder on Mayer’s composer website, EMI producer Dennis Preston later asked him to write a short jazz-based piece. Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun heard it and suggested a larger collaboration between Indian music and jazz.

Mayer composed the music, and the Joe Harriott and John Mayer Double Quintet recorded it in two days. The album Indo-Jazz Fusions was released in 1966. The heritage organization PRSSV also describes the work as a meeting of Indian classical music and jazz, with Harriott and Mayer at its center.

Was John Mayer the creator of fusion music?

Calling Mayer “the creator of fusion music” without qualification overstates what the sources establish. His documented achievement is more specific: he was a foundational pioneer of Indo-Jazz fusion, and Indo-Jazz Fusions is an early, defining collaboration in that tradition. “Fusion” can refer to a much broader range of musical combinations; the available accounts do not establish that Mayer alone invented that wider genre or coined the term.

That distinction does not diminish the project’s importance. Mayer brought substantial compositional experience in Indian and Western classical music to an ensemble designed to put those traditions in sustained contact with jazz. Harriott was an essential collaborator, not a supporting detail in a solo creation story.

What happened after the first album?

Mayer and Harriott continued to perform and record together until Harriott’s death in 1973. Mayer revived Indo-Jazz Fusions in 1995. PRSSV reports that the revived project released four albums and toured. Mayer continued composing and performing until his death in 2004.

Where can readers find more about Mayer?

The South Asian Diaspora Arts Archive finding aid catalogs material related to Mayer, including concert programs, press clippings and a 1966 record sleeve. A finding aid identifies archival holdings; it is not, by itself, proof of every claim contained in those materials.

For a book-length account, Music Research Institute Press lists John O. Robison’s 2019 biography, From the Slums of Calcutta to the Concert Halls of London: The Life and Music of Indian Composer John Mayer. The listing gives 348 pages and ISBN 978-1-933459-09-7.
