The 2024 Mind Games: Ultimate Collection Deluxe Box is best understood as an archive of how John Lennon’s 1973 album was made and reimagined—not just a newly remixed album. Its six CDs and two HD audio Blu-rays gather alternate mix approaches, outtakes, studio material and an Evolution Documentary alongside the central Ultimate Mixes. That breadth makes it compelling for listeners who want to explore the sessions; the 2CD or 2LP editions are more direct choices if the new album mixes are the main attraction.
What this box set is—and what it is not
The John Lennon Estate and Universal Music Recordings released Mind Games (The Ultimate Collection) on 12 July 2024 as a remix-and-expansion project for Lennon’s 1973 album. Authorized by Yoko Ono Lennon and produced by Sean Ono Lennon, with production and creative direction overseen by Sean, it was designed to explore the New York Record Plant sessions as well as present the album in new mixes. The official announcement names Paul Hicks, Sam Gannon and Rob Stevens as mixers or engineers. John Lennon’s release announcement describes unreleased outtakes, unaltered versions, instrumentals, stripped-down mixes, studio chatter and related material as part of that exploration.
This review concerns the 6CD/2-Blu-ray Deluxe Box. It is not the separate 9LP/6CD/2-Blu-ray Super Deluxe collector set, which adds substantially more physical material. The official store lists the latter as a distinct package with two books, reproduction artwork and other collector objects. John Lennon Official Store

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Ultimate Mixes: the central newly mixed presentation of the album.
- Elemental Mixes: alternate presentations intended to expose different aspects of the recordings.
- Elements Mixes: another mix-focused set of perspectives on the material.
- Evolution Documentary: a documentary-style sequence tracing the music’s development.
- Outtakes: alternate and unreleased session performances.
- Raw Studio Mixes: less polished studio views that foreground the recordings in process.
The Blu-rays add high-definition stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos versions of the mixes, plus a 2024-remastered “Mind Games” video and a “You Are Here” tape-boxes video. In practical terms, the package offers more than a stack of alternate versions: it provides different ways to follow the album from finished presentation toward the session floor. Exact track-by-track contents and format details are set out in the official announcement.
How does the set work as a listening experience?
The strongest reason to choose the Deluxe Box is its breadth. Ultimate Mixes give the listener a clear route through the album, while the Elemental and Elements approaches, outtakes, documentary sequence and Raw Studio Mixes invite comparison and repeated visits. The set’s appeal therefore depends less on wanting one definitive play-through than on being curious about choices, layers and development.

The mix character has also drawn favorable critical attention, but judgments should be read as criticism rather than measurement. The Second Disc, in its 29 August 2024 review, discusses the music and the set’s archival value in detail. Read The Second Disc’s review. A favorable review description surfaced on Metacritic characterizes the Ultimate mixes as presenting Lennon’s voice and the instruments more clearly; that is one critic’s assessment, not an objective specification or proof of consensus. Metacritic’s critic-review page.
The Blu-ray formats make the box particularly relevant to listeners with compatible playback equipment who want high-definition stereo, 5.1 or Dolby Atmos options. Those format choices are part of the package’s value, but the announcement alone cannot establish which mix a particular listener will prefer. The documentary and session-oriented CDs are the more distinctive draw for anyone who already knows the album and wants context beyond the finished tracks.

Which edition makes sense for you?
| Edition | Music and playback focus | Package scale | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2CD Ultimate Mixes | Ultimate Mixes; CD format | Compact edition | Listeners who mainly want the new album mixes without the expanded session archive. Official store listing |
| 2LP Ultimate Mixes | Ultimate Mixes; LP format | Compact edition | Listeners who prefer the album-mix presentation on vinyl. Official store listing |
| Deluxe Box | Six CDs of mix variations, documentary and session material; two HD audio Blu-rays with stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos versions | Six CDs, two Blu-rays and a 136-page book | Listeners who want to investigate the album’s recording and alternate presentations as well as hear the Ultimate Mixes. Official release announcement |
| Super Deluxe collector set | Nine LPs, six CDs and two Blu-rays | Separate collector package with two books, reproduction artwork and assorted objects | Collectors seeking the larger physical presentation and its additional objects. Official store listing |
The 2CD and 2LP editions are the straightforward alternatives for a buyer whose priority is the remixed album rather than a deep dive. The Deluxe Box earns its larger footprint through the session and mix exploration, the book and the Blu-ray playback options. The Super Deluxe should be considered separately: its nine LPs and collectible contents are not part of the Deluxe Box reviewed here. Current pricing and stock are not assessed here, so compare retailer listings for the exact edition before buying.
Does the packaging add value beyond the discs?
The 136-page hardback book gives the Deluxe Box a substantial physical companion to its audio material. The much larger Super Deluxe package has a different collector emphasis, with more books and reproduced artwork and objects. The Super Deluxe edition won the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Packaging, as reported by the John Lennon site. That award recognizes packaging; it should not be treated as an audio-quality verdict.

Verdict
Mind Games: Ultimate Collection is most rewarding as a listening archive: it pairs a new album presentation with several routes into the sessions and a range of Blu-ray formats. For an album-first purchase, the 2CD or 2LP Ultimate Mixes edition is the more proportionate choice. For listeners who want to spend time comparing mixes and tracing the recordings’ evolution—and value the book and immersive-format options—the 6CD/2-Blu-ray Deluxe Box is the edition that delivers that deeper experience.
