John Farnham’s rare public appearance was a family outing, not a concert: he attended a Melbourne restaurant celebration for his wife Jill’s 70th birthday on 11 March 2025, according to PerthNow’s report published the next day. A later family update, reported by ABC News on 20 September 2026, said his health had deteriorated in recent months and described significant care needs at home. The dates matter: the birthday appearance and the subsequent health update are separate events, and neither establishes that Farnham returned to performing.
What happened at John Farnham’s rare public appearance?
Farnham was seen at a Melbourne restaurant on Tuesday, 11 March 2025, for a celebration of Jill Farnham’s 70th birthday. PerthNow described the outing as a rare public appearance since his 2022 cancer battle. It was a personal occasion, not a public performance or concert.

The distinction is important because Farnham’s last public performance was at the Fire Fight fundraiser in Sydney in February 2020, according to ABC News’s May 2026 preview of a later tribute concert. A public sighting does not mean he has resumed singing onstage.
How the 2025 outing fits the timeline
2022: oral cancer diagnosis and surgery
Farnham was diagnosed with oral cancer in 2022 and underwent surgery. In an August 2023 notice, his official website described a 12-hour operation to remove a cancerous tumour, followed by reconstructive procedures and rehabilitation. The notice also said he had eight weeks of radiation and experienced complications, including infections.

2023–2024: an earlier cancer-free update and a family wedding
ABC News reported in July 2024 that Farnham had announced he was cancer-free a year after surgery. The report also noted that his public appearances had been sporadic since the August 2022 operation and that he attended his son Robert’s wedding in February 2024. That wedding was an earlier family occasion; the March 2025 birthday celebration was another separate outing.
March 2025: Jill’s birthday
PerthNow reported the birthday appearance on 12 March 2025. The report also discussed Farnham’s recovery and quoted passages attributed to his memoir, The Voice Inside. His account of difficulties with opening his mouth and producing the movements needed to sing describes his experience after surgery; it should not be treated as an assessment of his current ability to sing.

September 2026: a family health update and tribute concert
On 20 September 2026, ABC News reported that Farnham would miss a tribute concert held in his honour because his health had deteriorated in recent months. The family said he required continuous oxygen support, used a wheelchair for mobility and needed 24-hour nursing care at home. These details were attributed to the family statement, not to an independently published medical report.
What is known about John Farnham’s health now?
The latest detailed update in the cited coverage is the family statement reported by ABC News on 20 September 2026. It describes his health and care needs at that time. It does not identify a new diagnosis, explain the cause of the deterioration, or give a prognosis. The earlier report that he was cancer-free, published in 2024, and the family’s later account of his health address different points in time; the later update does not, by itself, establish that the cancer returned.

For readers looking for Farnham’s own account of his illness and recovery, his official site’s news page includes dated notices about The Voice Inside, his memoir co-written with Poppy Stockell. The site says the audiobook was narrated by Farnham, with two chapters narrated by Jill, and that an illustrated edition included a new chapter and more than 200 images. These are details from the artist-maintained site, rather than a new health assessment.
Was Farnham at the 2026 tribute concert, and did he perform?
No. ABC News reported that Farnham would miss the September 2026 tribute because of his health. Head and Neck Cancer Australia, the event organizer, described the Rod Laver Arena show as a tribute and fundraiser for the organization; its release said Farnham would not perform. The concert announcement referred to a lineup of 120 artists and musicians, not a claim that every announced artist appeared.
The organizer’s release also cited Farnham’s history at the venue, including 94 performances at Rod Laver Arena. That figure is the organizer’s description of his prior record, not a count of performances connected with the tribute.

The cited reports do not establish whether Farnham can sing now or whether he will perform again. PerthNow’s 2025 story included his memoir account of the physical difficulty of singing after surgery, while the family’s September 2026 update described his health and care needs without addressing his singing voice or a return to the stage. A past performance record or a family appearance cannot answer that question.
