John Cena’s WWE-billed final match ended with him tapping out to Gunther’s sleeper hold on December 13, 2025. WWE’s recap says fans then applauded Cena and chanted “Thank You Cena”; PWTorch separately reported that fans booed Paul “Triple H” Levesque when he entered the ring afterward. Cena later described the ending as a story of struggle, connection and peaceful closure.
What happened in John Cena’s final match?
The match headlined WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. WWE had announced it as the final match of Cena’s year-long farewell tour. Gunther earned the opportunity by winning WWE’s Last Time Is Now tournament.
WWE’s official event recap records a punishing sequence before the finish: Cena countered an earlier sleeper hold and put Gunther through the announce table with an Attitude Adjustment. Later, after an Avalanche Attitude Adjustment, Gunther countered another attempt, locked in the sleeper, and briefly lost control when Cena escaped and hit another Attitude Adjustment. Gunther applied the sleeper again, and Cena tapped out.
Why did Cena tap out to Gunther?
Cena later offered his interpretation of the finish in a conversation with Cody Rhodes on the December 18 episode of his podcast, as reported by PWTorch on December 19, 2025. He said the match “far exceeded whatever was in my heart and soul” and described its closing moments as a story of struggling, connecting with people he loved, and then taking a final breath peacefully. He also said he had told people beforehand that he was retiring and asked them to get the closure they needed.

That is Cena’s explanation of what the ending meant to him. It does not establish who chose the finish or prove that every fan accepted it. WWE’s announcement had described the bout as his final match, and the result provided a definitive on-screen ending to that farewell.
How did the crowd react to Cena’s farewell?
WWE’s recap says the audience jeered Gunther during the match, then rose to applaud Cena and chant “Thank You Cena” after the submission. Cena removed his shoes and wristbands, bowed and saluted as he left, and was honored in the ring by WWE performers. WWE did not describe the crowd as booing Cena.

Why did fans boo Triple H?
PWTorch reported that fans booed WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque when he entered the ring after the match and again when he appeared at the post-show. That report documents a reaction, not a single motive shared by everyone in the audience. The sources cited here do not include a named person’s verified explanation specifically accounting for the boos.
The moments should be kept distinct: Gunther won the match by submission; the crowd applauded and thanked Cena after the finish; and PWTorch reported boos for Levesque’s later appearances. One reaction does not cancel out the others.

When and where was the match, and how was it billed?
WWE’s September 30, 2025 announcement set the match for December 13 at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., as the culmination of Cena’s year-long farewell tour. The announcement cited 17 world championship reigns. WWE’s December 5 preview identified Gunther as the tournament winner and called him the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time; that is WWE’s characterization.
Was this Cena’s retirement?
WWE billed the December 13 bout as Cena’s final match, and Cena later spoke of being “out there one last time.” Those statements support describing it as his WWE-billed final match and farewell. They do not, by themselves, establish that he will never appear in any other capacity.

What WWE said before the match
In the September 30 announcement, WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque said: “John’s contributions to WWE are immeasurable. There are no words that can truly relay how much he means to this business.” Events DC President and CEO Angie M. Gates said: “Washington, D.C. is the Sports Capital and the perfect place to honor John Cena’s remarkable legacy.” Both statements preceded the match and should not be read as responses to the later crowd reaction.
