Spoilers throughout. John drugs his parents and sister, leaves them trapped in an unfinished bunker, and uses their absence to test what it means to live without adult rules. When he eventually lets them out, the family returns to a dinner table that looks much like the one in the opening—but the film never explains John’s motive or shows whether the family confronts what happened. Its quiet ending leaves that gap deliberately open.
What happens in John and the Hole?
John is a quiet 13-year-old living with his affluent family in a suburban home near woods in Massachusetts. He discovers an unfinished bunker, drugs his parents and older sister, and confines them there. While they are trapped, John returns to the house and experiments with adult freedom and control.
The film establishes what John does, but not a clear grievance that explains why he does it. Nor does it give him a fully articulated plan. The premise is part of the film’s meditation on adolescent angst, as described by distributor IFC Films when it announced the film’s North American release. IFC Films’ announcement identifies the film as adapted by Nicolás Giacobone from his short story “El pozo.”
Why does John put his family in the hole?
The film does not settle on a single motive. John’s actions can be read as an extreme attempt to claim independence, test his control over other people, or discover what life feels like without adults directing it. Those readings fit what he does, but none is confirmed as the reason he acts.

Director Pascual Sisto has emphasized that the film withholds information and leaves interpretation to the audience. In an interview with MEL Magazine, he discussed the film’s adolescent perspective without supplying a definitive psychological explanation. The evidence does not justify diagnosing John or treating a thematic clue as a confirmed motive.
What does the story-within-the-story mean?
A mother tells a young daughter the story of John, placing the main events inside a second narrative. That frame makes the viewer consider whether John’s story is being presented as reality, fable, or something between the two. Sisto has described the film as a contemporary fable, telling MovieMaker: “We wanted to do a contemporary fable.”

The parallel stories also invite a contrast between John’s privileged circumstances and the girl’s. Sisto has affirmed that as one strong interpretation, not a definitive key to the frame. The film leaves viewers room to decide how the two stories relate.
What happens at the end?
John eventually lets his family out of the bunker. The film then returns to a family dinner composition that echoes the opening. The familiar arrangement suggests a return to ordinary life, but the ending does not show a clear reckoning: it gives no definitive account of the family’s response, whether John is punished or forgiven, or how his relationship with them will change.

Sisto told the National Board of Review that the two dinner scenes were filmed on the same day and designed as visual rhymes. Their outward similarity is intentional, but the characters have different psychological experiences. He noted that the father looks at John differently in the final scene and said that “silence is what the film is about in many ways.”
Why does the final dinner feel unsettling?
The table looks familiar, yet the audience knows what the family has endured. That gap between a calm image and an unspoken crisis makes the ending’s apparent normality disturbing. One director-supported reading is that the family is burying what happened instead of confronting it.

In a PopCulture.com interview, Sisto called the return to quiet and silence “there’s something of a quiet horror of returning back to this quietness and this silence.” He connected the film to the damage of internalizing problems and not speaking when one should. He also suggested that the ordeal may have brought the family closer, while leaving how they will deal with John unresolved. These are the director’s interpretations, not settled facts about what every character thinks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is John evil, or has he changed?
The film shows John committing a serious act of cruelty, but it does not label him evil or establish that he has been transformed by the experience. Letting his family out does not, by itself, prove remorse, and the final dinner does not prove forgiveness. The ending’s restraint is part of its design: it gives the audience the family’s return to the table, not a definitive judgment or explanation.
