John Amos, the actor who played James Evans Sr. on Good Times and adult Kunta Kinte in Roots, died in Los Angeles on August 21, 2024, at 84. His publicist, Belinda Foster, announced the death on October 1, 2024; the cause was natural causes.

When and how did John Amos die?

The Associated Press reported that Amos died of natural causes. The date of death and the date the news became public are different: Foster confirmed it publicly on October 1, more than a month after his August 21 death. No more specific medical cause has been established in the cited reports. The Associated Press obituary and CBS News’ obituary provide the published details.

Who was John Amos?

Amos built a career around grounded, authoritative performances, often portraying working parents and community figures. Before acting, he graduated from Colorado State University with a sociology degree, played football, worked as a social worker at New York’s Vera Institute of Justice, wrote advertising and comedy material, and briefly pursued professional football. AP’s career account traces that route into television.

His first major television role was weatherman Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which he appeared on from 1970 to 1973. That work led to the role that made him widely known.

What did John Amos play on Good Times?

Amos played James Evans Sr. on CBS’s Good Times, which ran from 1974 through 1979. The sitcom centered on one of television’s early portrayals of a Black two-parent family. Amos later described it as “the closest depiction in reality to life as an African American family living in those circumstances as it could be,” a view quoted by AP in a 2024 obituary.

James Evans Sr. became one of Amos’s signature roles because the character combined humor, pride and pressure while supporting his family under difficult economic conditions.

Why John Amos remains important

Amos connected mainstream television, historical drama and comedy without reducing his characters to a single type. His work as James Evans Sr. gave audiences a forceful family presence in a contemporary sitcom, while Kunta Kinte placed his acting at the center of a landmark account of slavery and ancestry. His son Kelly Christopher Amos said that “many fans consider him their TV father,” a description quoted in the PBS NewsHour report carrying the AP obituary.
