A source described by PEOPLE as close to Joey Lawrence and Samantha Cope alleged that Lawrence’s relationship with actress Melina Alves contributed to the couple’s separation. Lawrence denied having a physical relationship with Alves while filming a movie and called the rumors false. The reporting does not establish that an affair occurred or that it caused the separation.
What did the source allege?
In an August 23, 2024 report, PEOPLE attributed the claim that Lawrence’s relationship with Alves contributed to his separation from Cope to an unnamed source close to the former couple. That is an account attributed to a source, not a verified finding.
The same PEOPLE report summarized allegations in Alves’s estranged husband Edward Rider’s divorce filing. Rider alleged that he discovered an affair in late March 2024 and that it occurred in California and at other times and places. Those statements were allegations in divorce paperwork, not a court finding.
What did the divorce filing say?
ABC News reported that Cope filed for divorce on August 13, 2024. Her filing cited “irreconcilable differences” and listed June 7, 2024, as the date of separation. That stated legal ground is distinct from the unnamed source’s account of what contributed to the separation.

How did Lawrence and Alves respond?
Lawrence denied a physical relationship during filming
On August 29, 2024, Lawrence said he and Alves “did not have a physical relationship” while filming Socked in for Christmas. He also wrote, “These rumors are false.” His statement specifically addressed the period while they were filming; it does not independently establish what happened outside that scope.
Alves declined to discuss the friendship’s details
In a statement reported by PEOPLE on December 5, 2024, Alves said the reported reconciliation between Lawrence and Cope came as a surprise to her and that, if true, she wished them well. She said she wanted to keep the details of her friendship with Lawrence private. Her comment did not resolve the affair allegations.

Was the divorce finalized?
PEOPLE reported that Cope signed an entry of dismissal on December 1, 2024, served Lawrence on December 5, and that the Los Angeles Superior Court filed the dismissal on December 10. This means the divorce filing was dismissed at that point. A dismissal is a procedural development, not a ruling on whether an affair occurred. The reporting cited here does not establish the couple’s relationship status after that date.
