Former Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton was arrested and charged after an alleged assault near a golf club in Huyton on 8 March 2026. He has pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch. A court adjourned the trial to 8 March 2027; a renewed bail application was refused in September 2026, and Barton was remanded in custody. The charge remains an allegation, not a finding of guilt.
What happened in Huyton?
Emergency services were called at around 9pm on 8 March 2026 to Fairway, Huyton, near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club, after a report that a man had been assaulted. Initial police information said two men had been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding. Reports later identified Barton and Gary O’Grady as having been charged in connection with the incident.
The complainant was identified in court reporting as Kevin Lynch, 51. Early police reporting described injuries to his face and ribs; later coverage reported serious injuries to an eye. Those descriptions are attributed to the reporting and do not establish what happened or who was responsible.

On 2 September 2026, the case was adjourned and the trial was rescheduled for 8 March 2027, with an expected duration of two weeks. On 7 September, a renewed bail application was refused and Barton was remanded in custody. The report also listed 11 December 2026 for a pre-trial hearing.
