Before The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns, remember this: Halbrand was Sauron, the three Elven Rings were forged, and the Southlands became Mordor. Season 2 revealed how Sauron manipulated Celebrimbor, left the nine rings for mortal men in his hands, and ended with major losses across Eregion, Khazad-dûm, and Númenor. Season 3 is scheduled to begin November 11, 2026; its announced story setup is a preview, not a recap of episodes that have aired.
What happened in season 1?
Sauron used the name Halbrand
Galadriel met Halbrand during her travels and learned late in the season that he was Sauron. Before his identity was exposed, he had already influenced the Elves’ plans for making powerful Rings. The revelation matters going into season 2: Galadriel knows who he is, even as he continues to deceive others. Amazon’s season 2 explainer describes his return to the Elves in a new guise.
The first Rings were made for the Elves
Celebrimbor forged the three Elven Rings first, using mithril that Elrond obtained with help from Durin IV. That made Khazad-dûm part of the larger Ring story, not a separate subplot. Durin IV defied his father to help Elrond, while the dangers of mining and the threat of the Balrog hung over the Dwarven kingdom.
The Southlands became Mordor
Adar’s Orcs set off a volcanic eruption that devastated the Southlands and established Mordor. The eruption also changed the course of the Númenórean expedition: Elendil believed his son Isildur had died in the aftermath.

Númenor’s intervention sharpened its divisions
Queen-regent Míriel’s alliance with Galadriel and intervention in the Southlands provoked political discontent in Númenor. The island was already divided over its relationship with the Elves and the wider conflict; the expedition deepened those fractures.
The Stranger and Nori left together
Season 1 ended with the Stranger and Nori setting out together, while his identity remained a mystery. Season 2 later identified him as Gandalf.

What did season 2 change?
Sauron returned as Annatar
With Galadriel aware that Halbrand was Sauron, he approached Celebrimbor under the name Annatar, promising knowledge and steering the Elves toward making more Rings. His deception was purposeful: he was not simply hiding his identity, but using Celebrimbor’s ambition and skill to advance his own plan.
The finale left the conflict exposed
By the season 2 finale, the central danger was no longer only Sauron’s concealed identity. Celebrimbor, Adar, and King Durin III died; Sauron gained the nine rings intended for mortal men; Gandalf and Nori parted ways; and Elendil escaped to rally the Faithful against Pharazôn. What is confirmed about season 3?
Amazon’s announcement, updated July 24, 2026, places the story five years after Eregion’s fall. Its synopsis says Sauron’s forces have conquered much of Middle-earth; Khazad-dûm is sealed; Lindon and Rivendell are protected by the Three Rings; and Sauron is working from Barad-dûr to harness the One Ring. Amazon sums up the announced setup with the line, “In Season 3, Middle-earth is at war.” These details describe the season’s premise, not events already shown in aired episodes. Amazon says seasons 1 and 2, 16 episodes in total, are available on Prime Video. Streaming availability and membership terms can vary by location. Its season 3 release announcement says the launch is planned across more than 240 countries and territories; that is Amazon’s distribution statement, not an independently audited reach figure. New and returning cast
Amazon lists Charlie Vickers as Sauron and Morfydd Clark as Galadriel among the returning actors. Confirmed additions include Jamie Campbell Bower as Celeborn, Zubin Varla as Khamûl, Eddie Marsan as Thrain, Andrew Richardson as Anarion, Adam Young as Marnûkh, and Simon Pegg as the voice of the Balrog.
