What did Jimmy Carter ask Joe Biden to do?
At a California fundraiser in March 2023, Biden said, “He asked me to do his eulogy,” then corrected himself: “Excuse me, I shouldn’t say that.” The Associated Press reported the exchange; CBS News also reproduced Biden’s words. They are Biden’s account of a private conversation, not a quotation from Carter. The sources reporting the disclosure do not include a public confirmation from Carter.
Why did Biden’s remark draw attention?
Carter was still alive when Biden spoke. He had entered hospice care at home in Georgia in February 2023, so Biden’s candid remark about a future eulogy stood out. It was not something Biden said at Carter’s funeral or memorial: the disclosure took place nearly two years before Carter died.
Did Biden deliver Jimmy Carter’s eulogy?
Yes. Carter died on December 29, 2024, aged 100. Biden delivered a eulogy at the memorial service held at Washington National Cathedral on January 9, 2025. In his official remarks, Biden reflected on Carter’s character, Christian faith, public service and humanitarian example.

How did Biden describe their friendship?
Biden said he had known Carter since his early years as a Delaware senator supporting Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign. The Associated Press reported that Biden was the first senator outside Georgia to endorse Carter’s presidential bid. In his 2025 memorial remarks, Biden recalled that their friendship began in 1974 and that he and Jill Biden visited Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter in Plains in April 2021.
Biden’s eulogy connected their friendship to a lesson he said Carter had taught him: “Jimmy Carter’s friendship taught me—and, through his life, taught me that strength of character is more than title or the power we hold.”
