President Joe Biden paid tribute to the Grateful Dead at a White House reception for the 47th Kennedy Center Honors on December 8, 2024. The East Room event honored the band alongside four other recipients; it was a reception before the Honors ceremony, not the ceremony itself.
What Biden said about the Grateful Dead
In his remarks, Biden described the band as having emerged from a transformative era and outgrown its original cultural moment: “Formed in the San Francisco Bay at an inflection point in history, the Grateful Dead have long since transcended 1960 counterculture.” The quotation is from the official U.S. Government Publishing Office transcript of the president’s December 8 remarks.
