What is publicly known about Jock Zonfrillo’s death?
Zonfrillo, a chef and MasterChef Australia judge, died in Melbourne aged 46. His family confirmed his death in a statement carried by Paramount ANZ on May 1, 2023, saying he had died the previous day and asking for privacy as they grieved. On May 1, 2023, ABC reported that Victoria Police had not revealed a cause of death and said there were no suspicious circumstances. “No suspicious circumstances” describes the police position on the circumstances; it does not establish a medical cause such as natural causes. ABC News’ report
Did the coroner publish the finding?
No. In a report published February 6, 2025, 7NEWS said the Coroners Court of Victoria investigation was completed on August 27, 2024. It quoted a court spokesperson: “At the close of the investigation, the coroner determined that the finding would not be published.” 7NEWS’ report

The finding’s contents and any medical conclusion are therefore not available in these public reports. It would be inaccurate to describe what the coroner concluded or to present speculation as an official finding.

The cited public reporting establishes that the coroner decided the finding would not be published, but it does not state the reason for that decision. Zonfrillo’s family asked for privacy in May 2023; the available reporting does not establish that this request caused or explains the coroner’s decision.

In October 2023, former MasterChef Australia judge Melissa Leong explained her own decision not to speak publicly about the death, telling ABC: “People want to know why … and, for me, the why is very simple: Because it’s not my story to tell,” ABC News reported. Her comment reflects her personal boundary; it does not disclose or confirm a cause of death.
