Jo Andres, the filmmaker and choreographer married to Steve Buscemi for more than three decades, died at 64, the Associated Press reported on January 13, 2019. Andres was known for work that crossed dance and film, including the award-winning 1996 short Black Kites.
Who was Jo Andres?
Andres was a filmmaker and choreographer whose work drew on modern dance and film. In a 2011 interview with BroadwayWorld, she spoke about making movement for actors, who remain inside their characters rather than aiming for the uniformity often expected of a group of dancers. “I really love doing dance for actors because, obviously, everyone is still in their characters,” she said. Read the BroadwayWorld interview.
Buscemi described her performances as combining dance, film and slides in that same interview. The Guardian’s 2017 profile also portrayed Andres as an artist and filmmaker and offered a contemporaneous glimpse of the couple’s life in Brooklyn; that location detail describes the profile at the time, not a current address. Her work included the short film Black Kites
The Associated Press identified Black Kites, a 1996 short film, as Andres’s best-known work and reported that it won several film-festival awards. Its focus on her creative work is an important part of her story beyond her marriage to Buscemi. Read the Associated Press report republished by the Los Angeles Times.

On January 13, 2019, the Associated Press reported that Buscemi’s representative, Staci Wolfe, confirmed Andres’s death at age 64. Wolfe did not answer the agency’s questions about when Andres died or the cause, so the AP announcement did not establish either detail.
In 2020, Us Weekly reported on Buscemi’s interview with GQ and described Andres’s cancer battle. Buscemi spoke about the pain of dying from cancer and the experience of mourning her. That later account provides illness context, but it does not establish a precise medical cause of death from a primary record. Read Us Weekly’s 2020 report.
