If you searched for “JioCinema not working,” first check whether you’re using JioHotstar. JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar came together under the JioHotstar name on February 14, 2025, so the current app to look for is generally JioHotstar—not an old JioCinema installation. JioStar announced the transition; older devices or help pages may still show the JioCinema name.

For a quick diagnosis, test another website, open JioHotstar from your device’s official app store, force-close it, restart your device, update the app, turn off any VPN or proxy, and try another network. If the service works on one device but not another, focus on the failing device. If your subscription is missing, check your Jio plan and account before reinstalling.

Try these fixes first

  1. Check your connection. Open two unrelated websites or another streaming app. If those fail too, troubleshoot your Wi-Fi, mobile data, router, or internet provider first.
  2. Use JioHotstar. Search for JioHotstar in the official app store for your phone, TV, or streaming device. Do not assume an older JioCinema app is the current one.
  3. Close and reopen the app, then restart the device.
  4. Update JioHotstar and your device software.
  5. Turn off VPNs, proxies, smart DNS, and unblockers. They can cause location or playback errors; JioHotstar’s support page warns about VPN, proxy, and unblocker connections.
  6. Try another connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or test a hotspot. Jio’s older JioCinema guidance also recommends trying another connection and pausing other internet activity.
  7. Sign out and back in if the app opens but playback or account recognition fails.

These steps separate the most common causes: the old app, a local app fault, a weak or congested connection, an account or subscription issue, a regional restriction, or a wider service problem. They do not confirm whether JioHotstar is experiencing an outage.

Match the symptom to the fix

What you see Try this first
App will not open, crashes, or stays on the logo Update JioHotstar, force-close it, restart the device, then clear the app cache. Reinstall from the official store if it still fails.
Network error or blank loading screen Test another website, disable VPN or custom DNS, and switch networks. If other services also fail, investigate the connection.
Video buffers or freezes Pause downloads and video calls, move closer to the router, restart the router, and test a hotspot. Try another title to see whether the problem is title-specific.
Login or OTP trouble Use the mobile number associated with the account, check cellular service and SMS filtering, and try the official app. Avoid repeatedly requesting OTPs; wait for any on-screen limit to clear.
Subscription appears inactive Confirm the correct account and active plan in MyJio. For JioFiber, refresh the OTT entitlement if available.
“Too many devices” or concurrent-stream message Stop playback on other devices, force-close apps that may still be streaming, then retry. Check your plan’s simultaneous-stream limit.
Region or location error Disable VPN, proxy, and smart DNS. If you are outside India, the title may be restricted by regional rights.
Black screen but audio plays Restart and update the app and device; on a TV, check HDMI connections and HDCP compatibility.
Only one movie, show, or live event fails Try another title and test the affected title on another device. A single failure does not prove the whole service is down.

Fix JioHotstar on an Android phone or tablet

  1. Open Settings → Apps → JioHotstar. Depending on the phone, you may need to tap See all apps.
  2. Tap Force stop, then open Storage & cache and tap Clear cache.
  3. Reopen JioHotstar and test playback.
  4. If it still fails, return to the app’s storage screen and choose Clear storage or Clear data, if available. This removes local app state and signs you out, so make sure you can sign in again.
  5. Update JioHotstar through Google Play, restart the phone, and test once more. Reinstall from Google Play only if the other steps do not help.

Android menu names vary by manufacturer and operating-system version. Clearing cache is the lower-risk reset; clearing data or reinstalling is more disruptive and is not a guaranteed fix.

Fix JioHotstar on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Force-close JioHotstar and restart the device.
  2. Update the app in the App Store and check for an iOS or iPadOS update.
  3. If the problem persists, open Settings → General → iPhone Storage → JioHotstar → Offload App, then reinstall it.
  4. If offloading does not help, delete the app and install it again from the App Store. Sign in when prompted.

Fix buffering, freezing, or poor picture quality

  1. Pause downloads, cloud backups, video calls, and other streams on the network.
  2. Move closer to the Wi-Fi router and restart it. If you are near the router and your device supports it, test the 5-GHz Wi-Fi band; if you are farther away or separated by walls, 2.4 GHz may reach more reliably.
  3. Try mobile data or a hotspot to determine whether the home connection is the issue. A hotspot can use mobile data quickly.
  4. If the app offers a video-quality setting, lower it temporarily.
  5. Sign out and back in, clear the app cache, and try another title.

Jio’s older JioCinema TV FAQ cites 2 Mbps or above as a baseline for a good viewing experience. That is not a guarantee of smooth HD, 4K, or live-sports playback: signal quality, congestion, latency, packet loss, and other users on the connection also matter. Jio’s older video-on-demand FAQ recommends checking the connection, pausing bandwidth-heavy activity, trying another connection, and restarting or signing back in.

If the subscription is missing or login fails

First make sure you are signed in with the correct mobile number or account. A Jio recharge does not by itself prove that a JioHotstar benefit is active: plan benefits and content tiers can differ, and an entitlement may not have synchronized after a recharge or plan change. The title may also require a tier that your plan does not include.

  1. In MyJio, check your active plan and its OTT benefits. Jio’s JioFiber OTT troubleshooting guide directs users to check the subscription under My Plan.
  2. For JioFiber, open MyJio → Fiber → Subscriptions → Refresh if that option is available. Jio documents this OTT entitlement refresh path.
  3. Sign out of JioHotstar, then sign back in with the account tied to the benefit. Check whether you have confused the JioFiber account number, MyJio login, and streaming-service login.
  4. If an OTP does not arrive, check mobile signal, SMS blocking or spam filtering, and dual-SIM settings. Use the number associated with the account and follow any wait period shown on screen; there is no single wait time to assume.

For a concurrent-stream error, close playback on other devices and force-close the app there if necessary. JioHotstar’s FAQ advises closing the earlier premium stream and refreshing when such an error appears. Retry after the other stream has stopped, and check the plan’s device limit.

Fix JioHotstar in a browser

Use the official JioHotstar website rather than an old JioCinema address. Refresh the page, sign out and back in, and ensure cookies are enabled. Test a private or incognito window to identify a cookie or extension conflict; temporarily disable ad blockers, script blockers, VPNs, proxies, and similar tools while testing. Use a current browser such as Chrome, Edge, Safari, or Firefox.

Mobile-browser playback may not be available in every case. JioHotstar’s published terms say mobile users may be prompted to use the app. If mobile web playback fails, try the official JioHotstar app instead.

Fix the TV app or Jio Set-Top Box

Smart TV or streaming stick

  • Search the TV or streaming device’s official app store for JioHotstar. Availability depends on the device platform and store support; older JioCinema guidance lists Google Play Store for Android TV, Amazon Appstore for Fire TV Stick, and JioStore for Jio Set-Top Box.
  • Update the app and TV or streaming-device software, then restart the device. If JioHotstar opens but fails, clear its cache or data using the device’s app settings, if available. Clearing data may sign you out.
  • Do not install APKs from unverified websites. Unofficial or modified apps can be unsafe, outdated, or incompatible with login and playback.

If audio plays but video is black on a TV, check the HDMI cable, receiver, or soundbar path and try another HDMI port. Protected playback can depend on HDCP support: JioHotstar’s published terms specify HDCP 1.4 or above for Full HD and HDCP 2.2 or above for 4K on Smart TVs. Update the TV and connected-device software and avoid unofficial screen-mirroring workarounds.

Jio Set-Top Box

  1. In MyJio, check that the OTT subscription is active under My Plan.
  2. On the set-top box, press Home → Settings → Applications → Downloaded Apps, then select the affected OTT app.
  3. Choose Clear Cache and, if needed, Clear Data. Jio notes that clearing data can require you to sign in again.
  4. Relaunch the app. If the subscription is still missing, refresh OTT entitlements in MyJio using MyJio → Fiber → Subscriptions → Refresh, if available.
  5. Restart both the Jio Home Gateway and the set-top box.

These paths are documented in Jio’s set-top-box OTT troubleshooting guide. Menu labels may vary by software version.

When the problem may be service-side

If JioHotstar fails on several supported devices and on more than one network, after you have ruled out the wrong app, VPN, account, and subscription issues, the fault may be with the account or service rather than your home connection. The supplied official support pages do not establish a live outage status, so do not assume a confirmed outage from one failed stream. If other titles work but one does not, treat it as a title-specific, rights, device, or live-event issue first.

When to contact support

Contact Jio or JioHotstar support if the same account continues to fail across devices and networks, an eligible subscription remains missing after checking or refreshing MyJio, or the error is clearly account-specific. For JioFiber set-top-box help, Jio’s cited troubleshooting page lists 1800-896-9999 and [email protected]; confirm current contact options on Jio’s support site. You can also use the Jio service-support portal.

Include your device model, operating-system and app versions, exact error text, account type (Jio mobile or JioFiber), approximate time of failure, whether you tested another network, whether other titles work, and a screenshot if possible. This helps distinguish an app fault from a network, entitlement, or title-specific problem.
