Jimmy Kimmel’s Return Monologue Set a YouTube Record in September 2025

Jimmy Kimmel’s September 23, 2025 return monologue became his most-viewed YouTube monologue, according to Variety. Variety reported 17.7 million views in the first 22 hours. That is a dated snapshot—not a current view count—and the record applies to monologues, not every video on the Jimmy Kimmel Live! channel.

How many YouTube views did Kimmel’s return monologue get?

Variety reported 17.7 million YouTube views after 22 hours, in a September 25, 2025 report. The Guardian had reported more than 15 million views after the first 16 hours. Those are sequential snapshots of the same video, not separate audiences to add together. Neither figure establishes the monologue’s current view count.

Variety described the return as Kimmel’s most-watched monologue ever on YouTube. The distinction matters: the report said roughly 100 other videos on the channel had higher view totals at the time, led by a game with the Avengers cast at 80 million views. The record was for a monologue, not the channel’s most-viewed upload overall.

What was Kimmel returning from?

ABC lifted a suspension that had lasted nearly a week, and Kimmel returned to the show on September 23, 2025. The suspension followed his comments about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and became a national controversy over free speech. In the return monologue, Kimmel said, “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” as reported by The Guardian. The statement clarified his stated intent; it should not be recast as an apology. The Associated Press characterized his return as offering no apology.

The return also took place amid affiliate preemptions. The Guardian and the Associated Press reported that some Nexstar- and Sinclair-owned stations continued to keep the program off air after ABC reinstated it. Those preemptions help explain why online viewing featured prominently in coverage, but the available figures do not prove they alone caused the YouTube spike.

How do the TV and online audience figures compare?

ABC/Disney reported several audience measures for the September 23 episode. They use different platforms and measurement systems, so they should be read side by side—not added into one deduplicated audience total.

Measure Reported figure What it counts
Early YouTube count More than 15 million in 16 hours, reported by The Guardian in 2025 The return monologue on YouTube; an early snapshot.
Later YouTube count 17.7 million in 22 hours, reported by Variety in 2025 The return monologue on YouTube; a later snapshot.
Broadcast audience 6.26 million viewers, reported by ABC/Disney in 2025 Preliminary Nielsen Fast National Live+Same Day program ratings for September 23.
Combined online figure More than 26 million views, reported by ABC/Disney in 2025 YouTube and social platforms combined, using Talkwalker Social Content Ratings—not YouTube alone.

ABC/Disney also said the episode earned a 0.87 Adults 18–49 rating, its highest rating for a regularly scheduled episode in more than 10 years. The company said significant preemptions affected 23% of U.S. TV households and that its initial ratings data excluded streaming. These qualifications matter when comparing a broadcast rating with online view totals: the numbers do not cover identical audiences or viewing methods.

What monologue held the earlier record?

The Guardian identified Kimmel’s 2017 monologue about his son Billy’s congenital heart condition and immediate open-heart surgery as his previous most-viewed monologue. Variety reported that the 2017 video had 14.7 million views at the time of its reporting in 2025. Variety also identified Kimmel’s 2020 Kobe Bryant remembrance as another prior top-performing monologue. These are historical outlet-reported figures, not a current channel analytics export.

A separate comparison helps explain the “nearly one year” framing without changing the monologue-only record. A September 25, 2025 report from Rolling Stone Australia said the comeback had become the show’s most-watched upload since an interview with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent the previous year. That comparison concerns all uploads, not just monologues, and is distinct from Variety’s monologue record.

What the record does—and does not—show

The September 2025 reports establish that Kimmel’s return monologue quickly surpassed the earlier monologue benchmark in YouTube views, while the broader channel still had videos with higher totals. They also document substantial reported broadcast and combined social-platform audiences, each measured on a different basis. They do not establish a current YouTube total or a single, deduplicated count of everyone who watched across television, YouTube and other social platforms.
