It’s been a hard year,” he said, adding that viewers had “literally pulled us out of a hole.”
What Kimmel said in his final 2025 monologue
Kimmel began by noting that it was the show’s final episode of the year. He described a year of both lows and highs, saying it might have been harder than any year in his life. As he became tearful, he apologized for crying and thanked viewers for their support and enthusiasm.

“This year, you literally pulled us out of a hole and we cannot thank you enough, personally,” Kimmel said, according to TheWrap’s account. TheWrap also reported that he appreciated the audience’s support and enthusiasm “and not just for watching.” Rolling Stone independently reported the episode timing and the central remarks.
Why the year was described as difficult
TheWrap places Kimmel’s comments in the context of ABC’s brief suspension of the show in September 2025 and the death of bandleader Cleto Escobedo III. That is the outlet’s framing of the year; Kimmel’s quoted remarks do not define “a hole” as referring specifically to either event.
