Surgeons placed a new valve, and Kimmel said Billy was happy and healthy after the procedure. In February 2025, Kimmel told E! News that Billy was in perfect health.
What happened in Billy Kimmel’s third surgery?
Billy had the operation over Memorial Day weekend in 2024 at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Vaughn A. Starnes, who led all three of Billy’s heart operations, placed a new valve. Kimmel announced the surgery in a May 2024 post, writing: “This weekend, our boy Billy had his third (of three, we hope) open heart surgery. We went into this experience with a lot of optimism and nearly as much fear and came out with a new valve inside a happy, healthy kid.”
Starnes said he expected Billy to improve after the valve was placed, but was surprised by how quickly he did. He described the latest operation as an instant success.
How is Billy doing after the surgery?
On May 30, 2024, Kimmel said Billy was doing very well after returning home. The later public update in the coverage cited here came on February 24, 2025, when Kimmel told E! News that Billy was “in perfect health” and “very healthy.” Those are Kimmel’s reported updates; no later medical statement is included here.

What heart condition does Billy have?
Billy was born with a severe form of Tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia, a congenital heart condition that affects how blood flows through the heart and receives oxygen. Dr. Starnes explained that Billy had no connection between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2024 that this diagnosis occurs in approximately one in 2,500 babies; that figure is attributed to that report.
Billy’s condition was not known to his family before birth. He was born on April 21, 2017, and clinicians noticed within hours that he was blue. An echocardiogram then revealed the heart defect. Starnes said the diagnosis caught the family by surprise.

When did Billy have his first two operations?
- At three days old: Billy underwent his first open-heart surgery to repair the defect.
- Seven months later: He had a second heart surgery.
- Memorial Day weekend 2024: At age 7, he underwent the third operation, which included placement of a new valve.
Starnes led all three operations at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He spoke about the work’s personal significance, saying, “It’s the greatest joy that I have. After 30 years … it never gets old.”

In his May 2024 announcement, Kimmel also addressed the financial burden families can face when a child needs lifesaving treatment: “No parent should ever have to decide if they can afford to save their child’s life. It just shouldn’t happen. Not here.”
