Emily Zemler’s November 7 report for Yahoo Entertainment describes Kimmel opening with jokes about leaving the country before shifting to a more serious response. Read Zemler’s account.
Why Kimmel became emotional
In the section Zemler describes, Kimmel listed people and institutions he believed faced a difficult future after the result. He said: “It was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hard-working immigrants who make this country go,”

He continued by naming healthcare, climate, journalism, justice, free speech, older people who rely on Social Security, Ukraine, NATO, truth, democracy and decency. These were Kimmel’s political judgments about the likely consequences of the result, not findings independently established by the account.
What he said about accepting the result
Kimmel acknowledged Trump’s win and argued that accepting the democratic process did not require giving up or responding with violence. Zemler reproduced his words: “The people voted and this is the choice we made. In January, Donald Trump becomes president and that’s that, he won. It doesn’t mean we give up, but it also doesn’t mean we storm the Capitol because we don’t like the result.”
Rank #2
His remark drew a distinction between continuing to oppose policies or outcomes and rejecting the election result itself. He urged viewers not to repeat the Capitol attack in response to an outcome they disliked.

Kimmel said he expected another Trump presidency might be worse than the first, but also voiced a tentative hope that the result could eventually serve as a wake-up call. As Zemler reported his monologue, he said: “The best I can come up with is we’ve been through this once before and yes, this time it is probably going to be worse, maybe a lot worse, but I also think that maybe we will look back and realize that in the long run, this is what we needed to wake us up.”
Rank #3
That was speculation and hope, not a prediction with a demonstrated outcome. The segment is best understood as Kimmel’s emotional response and argument about what the election might mean, rather than as a fact-check of his forecasts.
