He called 2025 a strange and hard year, apologized as he began to cry, and thanked viewers for supporting the program.
What Jimmy Kimmel said in his final 2025 monologue
Kimmel opened by welcoming viewers to what he called the show’s final show of the year. He reflected on a year of “lows” and “highs,” saying it may have been harder for him than any other year of his life. “I’m crying already, I’m sorry,” he said, before thanking the audience for its support and enthusiasm.

He told viewers they had “literally pulled us out of a hole and we cannot thank you enough, personally.” He also expressed hope that audiences would “bear with us during this extended psychotic episode that we’re in the middle of.” TheWrap published these excerpts from the monologue in its December 19 report; they are not presented as a full official transcript. TheWrap’s report and TV Insider’s account both described the emotional opening.
Why the moment carried extra weight
TheWrap linked Kimmel’s reference to being pulled “out of a hole” to the show’s brief ABC suspension and the November 2025 death of his friend and bandleader Cleto Escobedo III. TV Insider also cited the suspension and Escobedo’s death as part of the difficult year. Those are the outlets’ contextual interpretations; Kimmel did not explicitly say that either event alone was what he meant by the phrase.

Was this Jimmy Kimmel’s last show?
No. “Final show” referred to the last Jimmy Kimmel Live! episode of 2025, not a series finale. ABC published a schedule notice for the week beginning December 29, listing planned broadcasts after the December 18 episode. The Associated Press had also reported on December 8 that ABC extended Kimmel’s contract for one year, keeping him on the air until at least May 2027.
