Jimmy Hart was Hulk Hogan’s longtime friend and professional collaborator. Hart recalled first seeing Hogan at a Memphis wrestling show, later managed him in WCW, and said in a 2019 interview that they had been friends and worked together for more than three decades. The exact date they first met—and private details of their friendship—are not established in the available accounts.
How did Jimmy Hart and Hulk Hogan meet?
Hart recalled that Jerry Lawler invited him to watch a wrestler in Memphis. Hart recognized the man as Terry Bollea, who would become known as Hulk Hogan, and remembered thinking, “Oh my god! He looks awesome!” According to Hart’s 2019 recollection, Lawler said Hogan had asked him to be his manager; Hart encouraged Lawler to accept. Sports Illustrated published Hart’s account on July 22, 2019. The interview does not give a date for the encounter, so it cannot establish precisely when Hart and Hogan first met.

What was Hart’s role in Hogan’s wrestling career?
Hart’s relationship with Hogan was also a working one. WWE’s career profile says Hart joined Hogan when Hogan signed with WCW, managed him as he captured the WCW Championship, and worked behind the scenes composing entrance themes for many wrestlers.
That documents Hart’s role as Hogan’s manager in WCW; it does not establish that Hart was Hogan’s only manager or that Hart alone brought about Hogan’s success. Their work belongs to the broader story of Hogan’s WCW years: the Associated Press’s July 24, 2025 retrospective describes Hogan’s move from WWE to WCW in 1996 and his transformation into Hollywood Hogan in the nWo storyline. That career context does not, by itself, tell us about the private nature of his friendship with Hart.

Did Jimmy Hart consider Hulk Hogan a friend?
Yes. In the 2019 Sports Illustrated interview, Hart’s recollections supported the interviewer’s description of them as friends and coworkers for more than three decades. The interviewer supplied that phrasing in a question, so it should not be mistaken for a direct quotation from Hart. Hart also spoke about Hogan in a 2005 WWE interview, including in the context of Hogan’s SummerSlam match with Shawn Michaels. These public comments show a long association across wrestling and television, but do not provide a detailed account of their private friendship.
In that 2005 interview, Hart said, “I love both the guys,” referring to Hogan and Michaels. It reflects his public support for both wrestlers in the context of their match, rather than serving as standalone evidence of the depth of his personal relationship with Hogan. WWE published the interview on August 5, 2005.
