Jimmy Carter was alive and receiving hospice care when his grandson Jason Carter said in May 2024 that the former president was “still there” and nearing the end of an important faith journey. Jimmy Carter later died at home in Plains, Georgia, on December 29, 2024, aged 100. The remarks were a dated reflection on his grandfather’s spiritual experience—not a medical prognosis or a current health update.

Jason Carter explained that, in his view, there was a part of that journey “that you only can live at the very end.” He also recalled watching a Braves game with his grandfather. When Jason asked him about the experience, Jimmy Carter replied, “Well, I don’t know myself.” Georgia Public Broadcasting’s May 14, 2024 report covers the remarks.
What “still there” meant—and what it did not mean
Jason Carter was talking about his grandfather’s presence and faith as he approached the end of his life. His comments conveyed uncertainty: he described what he believed his grandfather was experiencing, while also recounting Jimmy Carter’s own admission that he did not know. They were not a clinical assessment, a prediction of how long Carter would live, or a statement about a specific diagnosis.
