Paris police found the bust that once stood at Jim Morrison’s grave in 2025, 37 years after it was stolen from Père-Lachaise Cemetery. Police found the bust in 2025, 37 years after its theft in 1988. The Associated Press reported that officers came across it by chance while carrying out a search connected to an unrelated fraud investigation; the recovery was not described as the result of a new inquiry into the bust’s theft. What happened to the bust?
It was installed in 1981
Croatian sculptor Mladen Mikulin made the bust, which was placed at Morrison’s grave in 1981 to mark the tenth anniversary of the singer’s death. Morrison died in Paris in 1971, aged 27, and was buried at Père-Lachaise. Ville de Paris; Associated Press, May 20, 2025.
It disappeared in 1988

Police announced its recovery in 2025
Following the find, the Paris judicial police announced its recovery. The Los Angeles Times published this English rendering of the announcement: “After 37 years of absence, the bust of Jim Morrison, stolen in 1988 from the Père Lachaise cemetery, has been found!” Los Angeles Times, May 20, 2025.
Has the bust been returned to Morrison’s grave?
The recovery announcement did not establish that the bust had been returned. The Associated Press reported on May 20, 2025, that there was no immediate word on whether it would go back to the grave. Why the recovery drew attention
Morrison was the singer of The Doors, whose songs include “Light My Fire,” “Break on Through” and “The End.” The bust’s disappearance was part of the history of his grave at Père-Lachaise; its unexpected recovery after 37 years brought the missing sculpture back into the news.
