Jim Morrison’s March 1, 1969, performance at Miami’s Dinner Key Auditorium led to a trial over alleged lewd behavior, indecent exposure, profanity, and drunkenness. The verdict did not uphold every charge, and a posthumous pardon decades later did not settle exactly what happened onstage. Altamont offers a starkly different documented example of a notorious rock moment: a fatal confrontation at a concert held later that year.
What happened at Jim Morrison’s Miami concert?
The Doors played the Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami on March 1, 1969. Morrison was charged afterward over alleged conduct that included lewd behavior, indecent exposure, open profanity, and public drunkenness. Those were allegations, not four facts established by the verdict. Accounts of the performance differ, and the central exposure allegation remained disputed. The case went to trial in 1970. Historical reporting republished in The Doors’ official archive records competing positions and witness testimony. The defense argued that Morrison’s language and conduct should be judged in the context of contemporary community standards. Witness statements and lawyers’ arguments are part of the trial record; they should not be mistaken for an uncontested account of everything that occurred.
Was Jim Morrison convicted after the Miami concert?
Yes, but not on every charge. The reported verdict convicted Morrison on indecent exposure and profanity counts and acquitted him of lewd behavior and drunkenness. That distinction matters: the broad phrase “lewd show” can blur separate allegations and outcomes.

In December 2010, Florida Governor Charlie Crist granted Morrison a posthumous pardon, citing doubts about the conviction. Altamont: a different kind of notorious rock moment
The Altamont Free Concert took place in California on December 6, 1969. The Library of Congress describes a fatal confrontation in which concertgoer Meredith Hunter was killed by a Hell’s Angel serving in a security role. Unlike the Miami case, whose central historical dispute concerns allegations and a criminal trial, Altamont is remembered for a death during the event.

The Library of Congress points to the 1970 documentary Gimme Shelter as a key film treatment of Altamont. It is a useful place to explore the event’s contemporary footage and aftermath, while keeping in mind that a documentary is a film account rather than a substitute for every archival record. Miami and Altamont are often grouped under the broad label of rock excess, but the records support different descriptions. Morrison’s case involved disputed conduct, multiple charges, a divided verdict, and a later pardon. Altamont involved a fatal confrontation at a concert and a documentary record that includes Gimme Shelter. Calling both “outrageous” conveys a reaction, not a measurable ranking or a claim that the events were alike.
