Jim Carrey posted a video message addressed to Emma Stone in August 2011, praising her and joking that he would marry her and have children with her if he were younger. He was 49 and Stone was 22. Carrey later called the message a comedy routine; Stone said the following year that she was flattered. The available reporting does not establish that their relationship changed afterward.

What Jim Carrey said in the video

On August 25, 2011, The Guardian reported that Carrey had posted the message on his website. He praised Stone as “all the way beautiful. Not just pretty, but smart and kind-hearted,” then joked about marrying her and having children with her if he were younger. The same remarks acknowledged that he was 49 and she was 22.

The video appeared as Carrey was launching a new website, according to a CNN broadcast transcript from that day. The Guardian reported that viewers differed over whether the performance seemed sincere, promotional, or a mixture; CNN’s hosts and guests also offered differing reactions. Those were contemporary interpretations, not proof of Carrey’s private intent.

How Carrey framed the message

Carrey later clarified on Twitter, as quoted by The Guardian: “My message to Emma Stone was a comedy routine.” He added: “And the funniest part is that everything I said is true.” Those comments convey both his description of the video as comedy and his playful insistence that its compliments were genuine.

What Emma Stone said afterward

In June 2012, CBS News reported that Stone had told New York magazine: “I was so flattered I can’t even tell you. Honest!” CBS also said Stone and Jason Sudeikis had been praising Carrey with others shortly before the video appeared, and that the group remarked on the coincidence afterward.

That is evidence of Stone’s reported reaction to the message. It is not evidence that she and Carrey began, ended, or otherwise changed a personal relationship.

What the reporting does—and does not—establish

  • Established: Carrey posted a video message addressed to Stone in August 2011, including a hypothetical marriage-and-children joke.
  • Established: Contemporary reports gave their ages as 49 and 22 at the time.
  • Established: Carrey called the video a comedy routine, while saying its content was true; Stone later said she was flattered.
  • Not established: The available reporting provides no later relationship timeline or evidence that the message changed their personal relationship.

Headlines describing the video as a “love letter” or saying Carrey wanted to marry Stone capture the story’s playful framing, not a confirmed romance. A related Independent report, credited to Bang Showbiz, also covered the episode; it is corroboration, not a basis for extending the timeline.
