Jillian Lauren, the true-crime author and wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was shot and wounded by Los Angeles police in her Eagle Rock backyard on April 8, 2025. Police initially arrested her on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer. Prosecutors later filed different firearm charges, and a judge granted mental health diversion. Separately, in March 2026, the Los Angeles Police Commission found that the officers’ decision to shoot was out of policy.
Why were police in Lauren’s backyard?
On April 8, 2025, Los Angeles police officers were assisting the California Highway Patrol in a search for people who had fled a hit-and-run crash near the 134 Freeway. Officers encountered Lauren in her Eagle Rock backyard. She was not connected to the crash, according to contemporaneous reporting.
Police said Lauren had a handgun and fired toward officers, who returned fire and wounded her in the arm. LAPD spokesperson Jennifer Forkish said the department’s investigation found a shell casing and video footage that, in the department’s account, showed Lauren repeatedly ignoring commands to disarm and firing her weapon at officers. The initial arrest was on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer; that was an allegation, not a conviction.
What did the video and 911 call establish?
LAPD released video that included officers’ body-camera views. In contemporaneous coverage, the views were described as obstructed by a fence, with a helicopter overhead; officers could be heard telling Lauren to drop the gun. Reporting said it remained unclear whether she heard the commands.

A neighbor’s 911 call offered a separate, limited account of the scene. The neighbor said: “There were three men, and one of them shot her, and the cops are looking for him right now … They have their guns out.” That was the neighbor’s statement, not proof of what Lauren believed or what happened before officers encountered her. The released material and reporting did not resolve whether she understood that the people outside were police.
What charges were filed, and what happened in court?
After the initial arrest allegation, prosecutors filed charges of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and negligent discharge of a firearm. These were the filed charges reported in the case, distinct from the attempted-murder suspicion reported at the time of arrest.

In September 2025, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Susan J. DeWitt granted Lauren mental health diversion. Reported conditions included not owning firearms, avoiding drugs and alcohol, and attending therapy. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said the charges would be dismissed if Lauren successfully completed two years of diversion. The latest located reporting does not establish that the charges have already been dismissed.
What did the Police Commission decide?
On March 26, 2026, the Los Angeles Police Commission unanimously found the officers’ decision to shoot out of policy, according to the Los Angeles Times. The finding differed from LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell’s conclusion that the use of deadly force was justified. The commission also voted 4–1 that the officers’ decision to draw their weapons was out of policy and criticized tactical and command decisions.
