Jill Biden led the U.S. presidential delegation to the Paris 2024 Olympic opening ceremony on July 26, 2024. The ceremony was planned as a river procession along the Seine, with athletes traveling by boat through central Paris. Biden’s role was to represent the presidential delegation—not to lead Team USA or serve as an athlete flag bearer.
What was Jill Biden’s role at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony?
The White House announced on July 12, 2024, that then First Lady Dr. Jill Biden would lead the U.S. presidential delegation to the ceremony. A July 24 report from the First Lady’s office said she would attend the ceremony and cheer Team USA at events. The delegation included Senator Alex Padilla, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, coach Dawn Staley and Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano, among others. The White House announcement concerned the presidential delegation, not the U.S. Olympic team.
The July 24 pool report also noted Biden’s earlier Olympic-related delegation appearances: she led the U.S. delegation to the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics opening ceremony, held in 2021 after a COVID-19 postponement, and, as Second Lady, led the delegation to the 2011 Special Olympics World Games opening ceremony in Athens. She also accompanied then Vice President Joe Biden at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. The First Lady’s office’s July 24 announcement gives the delegation details and this history.
When and where was the ceremony?
The Paris 2024 opening ceremony took place on July 26, 2024. Rather than being staged solely inside a stadium, the planned procession followed a six-kilometer route on the Seine from Pont d’Austerlitz to Trocadéro, with athletes traveling by boat. The City of Paris named landmarks including Notre-Dame de Paris, the Louvre, Pont Neuf, Pont des Arts and the Eiffel Tower as backdrops along the route. The City of Paris’s ceremony overview describes the route and planned staging.

What was said about the ceremony?
The City of Paris attributed this reflection to Olympic judo champion Teddy Riner: “To experience an Olympic Games opening ceremony wearing the colors of France is always emotional. But to experience it here, in France, and what’s more, in the heart of Paris, in direct communion with spectators from all over France and the world, is bound to make it an unforgettable experience.”
A July 27 First Lady pool report said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described the ceremony as “incredible”; the report excerpt did not include a longer assessment from her.
