Jhimma 2 is most rewarding when its returning ensemble simply gets to be together: the women’s easy rapport, comic timing and moments of hard-won tenderness give the Marathi comedy-drama its warmth. The sequel’s weakness is how often its story interrupts that flow with squabbles that feel recycled or arranged for a punchline.
Directed by Hemant Dhome, Jhimma 2 opened in theatres on November 24, 2023. The sequel brings the women from the first film back together for a trip to England’s Lake District to celebrate Indu’s 75th birthday. Indu (Suhas Joshi), Krutika (Sayali Sanjeev), Vaishali (Suchitra Bandekar), Manali (Shivani Surve), Meeta (Kshitee Jog), Nirmala (Nirmiti Sawant) and Tanya (Rinku Rajguru) are joined by tour operator Kabir (Siddharth Chandekar). The film runs about 2 hours 16–17 minutes, depending on the listing.
What the returning ensemble does best
The sequel’s central pleasure is not a fresh premise so much as the feeling of returning to a group whose members already know how to needle, comfort and entertain one another. Nandini Ramnath, reviewing for Scroll.in on opening day, calls it “more slickly filmed” than the 2021 original while praising the actors’ “lived-in chemistry.” That natural ease matters: the characters feel like friends with histories, not strangers assembled to exchange scripted quips.
Nirmala’s awkward exuberance supplies some of the film’s liveliest comedy, especially in her scenes with Tanya. Their contrast gives the jokes a character-based spark. Ramnath also notes the sequel’s affection for women who are unruly, talkative and complicated—the sort of people a film can let occupy the frame without asking them to become tidier or quieter.

Where the comedy and emotion meet
The film’s warmth is not only comic. Indu’s awareness of aging and Meeta’s relationship with the memory of her deceased spouse bring a more reflective register to the holiday. These strands give the reunion emotional stakes beyond the pleasure of seeing familiar characters together: friendship has to make room for grief, changing circumstances and the limits of time.
Kalpeshraj Kubal’s The Times of India review is more positive overall, awarding the film 3 out of 5 and commending its performances, screenplay, dialogue and introspection. That response aligns with the film’s strongest moments: when the actors can move between teasing and vulnerability, the ensemble feels generous rather than merely busy.

Why the story hits speed bumps
The film’s conflicts do not always develop as convincingly as its relationships. Ramnath’s main reservation is that some of the women’s quarrels seem to repeat friction the first film had already worked through. Other arguments appear to exist mainly to set up a punchline, rather than growing clearly out of what a character wants or fears. That can make the group’s established closeness feel briefly forgotten whenever the plot needs another interruption.
The result is an episodic rhythm: one exchange or incident gives way to the next, but not every sequence adds momentum to a larger emotional arc. Some potentially meaningful character moments happen privately instead of deepening the group dynamic at the heart of the film. Kubal likewise observes that it feels stretched at points. The scenic trip and the cast’s chemistry help carry these lulls, but they cannot always make the connective tissue feel sturdy.

Does the sequel renew the first film’s appeal?
Jhimma 2 preserves the original’s strongest asset—the pleasure of watching distinct women share space—and gives its ensemble more room for comic and emotional interplay. But familiarity cuts both ways. Returning characters can feel like old friends, while repeated squabbles risk making their growth seem less substantial than the film’s tenderer moments suggest.
This is a sequel for viewers who value ensemble chemistry and affectionate observation more than a tightly escalating plot. Its best scenes are funny without being cruel and perceptive about age, loss and friendship; its weaker stretches make the reunion feel more like a string of stops than a smoothly unfolding journey. The film’s speed bumps are real, but so is the warmth that keeps the trip worth taking.
