Kennedy Jr. who attended his 1996 wedding, recalled that guests knew of tensions between the couples but did not see them surface at the ceremony. Her account, reported by AOL from Page Six, offers a guest’s later perspective—not proof of what Carolyn Bessette or Caroline Kennedy privately said or felt.
What did the wedding guest recall?
Chermayeff said the tensions were “not really apparent at the wedding.” She recalled guests as being on their best behavior and happy for the newlyweds. Her most direct summary was: “At that point, there wasn’t a feeling of tension at all. It was just not there.” These are retrospective remarks attributed to her in Page Six reporting reproduced by AOL, rather than a contemporaneous record of every interaction at the wedding. AOL’s March 6, 2026 report identifies Chermayeff as one of the guests.
How does that compare with the scene in Love Story?
The series depicts friction between Carolyn Bessette and Caroline Kennedy around the couple’s secret 1996 wedding on Cumberland Island, Georgia. Chermayeff’s recollection describes a different thing: although people knew of tension between the two couples, she said it was not apparent to wedding guests. The episode is scripted dramatization; her interview is a later personal recollection. Neither establishes the details of private conversations that were not documented.
What is known about the wedding party?
AOL’s report says Lauren Bessette was the bride’s principal bridesmaid and Caroline Kennedy served as matron of honor, citing People. That reported detail differs from the series’ onscreen handling of the wedding party. The available reporting does not independently establish every wedding-party detail, so it should not be treated as a complete contemporaneous account.

What did the producers say about their sources?
In a February 26, 2026 interview with Us Weekly, executive producer Brad Simpson said the production used Elizabeth Beller’s Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy as a reference and drew on information from people around the couple to build some scenes. He described challenges capturing certain moments. That explains the production’s stated approach; it does not authenticate the wedding scene or establish that every dramatized exchange happened as shown. Executive producer Nina Jacobson said the team approached the characters with love and respect. Read the Us Weekly interview.
