J. Cole apologized to Kendrick Lamar for his diss track “7 Minute Drill” during his Dreamville Festival set in Raleigh, North Carolina, on April 7, 2024. A separate controversy concerned lines on Cole’s track “Pi,” which NPR reported a culture writer characterized as transphobic and directed at Lamar. The cited coverage documents calls for an apology over “Pi,” but does not establish whether Cole later apologized for those lines.
What J. Cole apologized for
The apology was about “7 Minute Drill,” Cole’s response to Kendrick Lamar’s challenge on “Like That.” The exchange began in the context of rap’s “big three” framing: Cole had grouped himself, Drake and Lamar among the leading rappers of their generation on Drake’s “First Person Shooter.” Lamar pushed back on “Like That,” a track on Future and Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You. Cole then released “7 Minute Drill” on Might Delete Later.
Two days after “7 Minute Drill” came out, Cole addressed it onstage at Dreamville Festival. The Associated Press’s timeline confirms that sequence and cautions that diss tracks can include exaggeration or unsubstantiated claims for dramatic effect; lyrics in this exchange should not be treated as verified biographical facts. What Cole said at Dreamville Festival
The Los Angeles Times reported Cole explaining his change of heart this way: “That don’t sit right with my spirit.” Los Angeles Times coverage.

Those remarks address Cole’s decision to enter the lyrical contest and his feelings about doing so. The cited festival accounts do not address the separate criticism of “Pi.”

How the “Pi” controversy is different
On “Pi,” a track on Might Delete Later, Cole faced criticism over lines that NPR’s Justin Tinsley, Andscape senior culture writer, described as “some subliminal bars that were directed towards Kendrick Lamar that were transphobic.” Tinsley added that “a lot of people want to see him apologize for that.” This is Tinsley’s characterization in an NPR interview, not a statement by Cole about the lyrics. NPR’s interview.
The distinction is important: Cole’s onstage apology for “7 Minute Drill” is documented in contemporaneous reporting. NPR’s coverage documents criticism of “Pi” and calls for an apology, but the sources reviewed here do not establish whether Cole later made one. That gap does not prove he never addressed the “Pi” lines.

Why the apology drew mixed reactions
Many fans expected a lyrical contest, helping explain why Cole’s reversal surprised listeners. NPR’s discussion placed the response in that context. The Atlantic described a divided reaction: some commentators mocked Cole for backing down, while others praised what they saw as honesty or maturity. There was no single consensus among listeners. In later interview coverage, Cole said he wanted to say enough to invite a response without causing permanent damage to his relationship with Lamar.
