Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy were under serious strain in the summer of 1999. The phrase “so disconnected” comes from friend Sasha Chermayeff’s memory of Memorial Day weekend—not from a public statement by either spouse. PEOPLE published her recollection on March 25, 2026, alongside other friends’ accounts of counseling, emotional distance and the pressures surrounding the couple.
What did “so disconnected” mean?
Chermayeff told PEOPLE that John had broken his ankle in a paragliding accident over Memorial Day weekend in 1999. Recalling that time, she said: “They were so disconnected. That’s what I remember most about that weekend. John was saying, ‘She’s so shut down.’ He meant emotionally. They were shut down from each other. They were at a very important crux.” The words describe Chermayeff’s retrospective impression of the couple; they are not a contemporaneous account from John or Carolyn.
She also said, “His heart was breaking, and I think hers was too.” Both comments are her interpretation of what she saw and heard, rather than a definitive account of either spouse’s private feelings. PEOPLE’s March 25, 2026 report is based on interviews with friends and people close to the couple.
What did friends report about their marriage?
According to PEOPLE’s account of friends’ recollections, the couple began marriage counseling that summer, and friends said they were no longer intimate. The report also describes a disagreement around having children: John wanted them, while Carolyn feared raising a family under paparazzi scrutiny. These details come from people interviewed years later; they should not be mistaken for statements made publicly by John or Carolyn.

The accounts describe a relationship facing serious challenges, but they do not establish that the couple had decided to separate. Chermayeff believed they might have tried again. Her hope was: “I like to believe they would have survived as a couple, and love would have prevailed. They had it in them to give it another shot.” That is a counterfactual belief, not something that can be known.
What pressures were affecting them in 1999?
Friends recalled several pressures converging that summer, according to PEOPLE:
- Paparazzi attention: Chermayeff said Carolyn was distressed by losing the privacy and freedom she had known before public scrutiny became a constant part of her life. Friends also described her fear that raising children would mean bringing them up under that scrutiny.
- Anthony Radziwill’s illness: Friends recalled his illness as part of the difficult circumstances around the couple. Radziwill was John’s cousin and a close friend of the couple.
- George: The magazine John founded was facing business difficulties, adding another source of strain in friends’ accounts.
Chermayeff also remembered spending time with the couple over Fourth of July weekend. She said having friends around could help John avoid confronting what he and Carolyn needed to address. PEOPLE quotes one confidant describing the summer as “a perfect storm,” while another friend said that without the crash, the few weeks of tension might have seemed “meaningless.” Those reflections point to how later events can make ordinary uncertainty look like a final chapter.

PEOPLE reports that Carolyn ultimately agreed to accompany John to a family wedding. On July 16, 1999, John, Carolyn and Carolyn’s sister Lauren died when the plane crashed off Martha’s Vineyard. The sequence of events is important, but the accounts of marital strain do not establish any connection between the relationship and the crash.

The available account of the couple’s private relationship rests on friends’ recollections published years later, rather than on a public explanation by John or Carolyn. It supports a careful conclusion: friends remembered significant tension and counseling, alongside signs of attachment and the possibility of trying again. What the couple would have chosen had they lived remains unknowable.
