In a February 2025 interview, he described the difficulty of losing the weight and said the change affected both the roles he was offered and how he saw himself.
Why Plemons gained weight for Black Mass
Plemons made the physical change for his portrayal of Kevin Weeks, a real person, in the 2015 film Black Mass. Speaking to The Independent on February 22, 2025, he said the chance to work with the director and play a role he had never expected to get made the decision worthwhile at the time. “I don’t regret it,” he said.
He also said gaining weight had been easy, while losing it was much harder. That experience is why his answer about repeating the transformation was hesitant rather than a categorical refusal: “I don’t know if it’s something I would do again – because it did mess me up a bit.”
How he says the change affected his work and identity
Plemons said the weight gain influenced the roles he was asked to play afterward. He felt that the decision began to affect how others saw him and eventually “started to seep into my own identity”—a version of himself, he said, that was not necessarily who he had been before.

What he said about later changes around Civil War
Plemons connected later weight loss with his role in Civil War, as well as the changes in his life as a father of young children. He said the role helped him get a handle on lifestyle changes, and that he felt better after losing weight. He also described the change as opening “another door to potential parts I can play.”

The headline captures Plemons’s uncertainty, not a firm rule about future roles. He has said he does not know whether he would gain weight for a part again. His comments hold both sides of the experience: he valued playing Weeks and does not regret the opportunity, while also describing lasting personal and career effects that would make him think carefully about repeating it.
