Jesse Malin was diagnosed with a spinal cord infarction after collapsing at a New York restaurant in May 2023, according to the Los Angeles Times. The condition left him paralyzed from the waist down, the report said. In his latest located update, dated August 15, 2024, Malin described using a walker and still having no feeling below his upper thighs. That is a dated account of his recovery, not a statement of his current condition.
What happened to Jesse Malin?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Malin collapsed at an East Village restaurant on May 4, 2023, and was taken to Mount Sinai, where he was diagnosed with a spinal cord infarction. The newspaper said he was paralyzed from the waist down and receiving neurological rehabilitation at NYU Langone. These details come from contemporaneous reporting, not a review of his medical records.
In an interview reported by the Los Angeles Times, Malin described his outlook on recovery at that time: “Even though I really believe it’s a temporary state, I’m not going to walk out of here tomorrow with a leather jacket and a cane and go hang out at the bar.”
What was Malin’s latest reported recovery update?
In an August 15, 2024 update published by Yahoo Entertainment, Malin said he was working with therapists in New York and Argentina, spending more of the day out of his wheelchair, and using a walker. What is a spinal cord infarction?
A spinal cord infarction is a stroke in the spinal cord or in the arteries that supply it. When blood flow is interrupted, spinal cord tissue can be damaged. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) describes it as a rare condition and notes that symptoms depend on the location and extent of the injury.
Possible symptoms include sudden weakness or paralysis, changes in pain and temperature sensation, back pain, and problems with bladder or bowel function. A spinal cord infarction can cause paralysis, but its effects are not identical for everyone.

How is it diagnosed and treated?
Evaluation may include a neurological examination and imaging such as MRI or CT. Other tests may be used to investigate a possible cause or distinguish the infarction from other conditions. NINDS says there is no standard treatment for spinal cord infarction; care generally focuses on an identified cause, symptom support, and rehabilitation. Physical and occupational therapy may help address weakness or paralysis, while recovery varies with factors such as the injury’s severity and location.
A 2024 systematic review of spontaneous spinal cord infarction likewise describes the condition as rare and says definitive diagnostic criteria and treatment guidelines remain lacking. Its review of cases cannot predict an individual patient’s outcome.

What should someone do if a stroke is suspected?
The CDC advises calling emergency services right away when a stroke is suspected. That is general stroke guidance, not a spinal-cord-infarction-specific treatment plan. Do not wait to see whether symptoms resolve.
