Jesse Malin suffered a spinal-cord infarction—a stroke in the spinal cord—on May 4, 2023. In interviews published in 2026, he described ongoing pain and continued work on his body, including physical therapy and stem-cell treatments. He has said that he and his doctor could not tell whether progress came from the cells or the therapy, which he received together.
What happened to Jesse Malin?
Malin recounted sudden burning pain and collapse before he was hospitalized and began rehabilitation. His spinal-cord infarction left him paralyzed below the waist, according to reporting and interviews. NINDS defines spinal-cord infarction as a stroke within the spinal cord or the arteries that supply it.
The April 2026 profile in The Irish Times reported that he was using a wheelchair and was paralyzed from the waist down at the time of that interview. These are details reported at that date, not a current medical examination.
What has Malin said about stem-cell treatment?
In a January 2025 interview with Classic Rock / Louder, Malin said, “I went there for physical and stem cell therapy at a clinic in Buenos Aires.” He described receiving cells taken from his own body alongside an intensive course of physical therapy: five days a week, four hours a day, over six months. Those schedule details are his account of that treatment period.

Malin said he asked the clinic’s lead doctor whether progress came from physical therapy or the cells. He said the doctor could not determine that because he had received both at the same time. His account therefore does not establish that stem cells caused improvement, or show how much either treatment contributed.
In April 2026, The Irish Times described robust physical therapy and, more recently, stem-cell treatments as part of his routine. Malin said, “I’m still in a lot of pain. I’m still working all the time on my body.” A New Jersey Arts review published August 20, 2026, also reported his comments about persistent pain and participation in a program in Argentina intended to speed healing with stem cells. These dated reports do not establish his exact current treatment schedule or clinical status.

What is known about treatment for spinal-cord infarction?
NINDS says there is no standard treatment for spinal-cord infarction. Its general care discussion includes treating an identified cause, supportive care for symptoms, and rehabilitation. Physical and occupational therapy may help people recover from weakness or paralysis, while recovery varies and can include lasting problems.
NINDS also lists cell-based therapies among research directions in its overview of spinal-cord-injury research. That research context is not proof that a particular stem-cell intervention treats spinal-cord infarction. Malin’s reported combined treatment cannot establish efficacy or serve as a treatment recommendation.

Sudden weakness, sharp or burning back pain, paralysis, or loss of sensation can occur with spinal-cord infarction. Anyone with symptoms that could indicate a stroke needs urgent medical assessment; Malin’s experience cannot determine an individual diagnosis or care plan.
